Climate Change
Homework #1
Python & Downloading Data
[Q1] In this dataset, temperature is measured as ‘anomalies’ rather than as absolute
temperature. Using NASA’s Frequently Asked Questions section as a reference, explain in your
own words what temperature ‘anomalies’ means. Why have researchers chosen this particular
measure over other measures (such as absolute temperature)?
Anomalies are the numbers that represent the average temperature in a year or in a period. The
researchers chose this particular measure because it can use to compare the other measures.
II. Preparing for Next Class
In our next class, you will begin your first lesson in how to analyze data for our project on
climate change. This will be your first touch with programming. To help prepare yourself and to
have a deeper understanding of some of the commands you will learn, please read chapter 2
(except section 2.10) from the online textbook and answer the following Python for Everyone
questions.
[Q2] Section 2.14, Activity 2.14.1
[Q3] Section 2.15, Activity 2.15.5
[Q4] Section 2.15, Activity 2.15.9
[Q5] Section 2.16, Activity 2.16.4 (called “var-mixed-price” about the price per shirt)
[Q6] Section 2.16, Activity 2.16.5 (called “var-mixed-tip” about the dinner cost per
person)
[Q7] Section 2.17, Activity 2.17.3 (called “var-wc-fruitq” about the cost of fruit)
You may type your responses directly in your homework submission or are welcome to take
screenshots of your responses from the textbook and include them instead.
