Exercice 1
The diagram below shows the process of making cheese.
Given is a diagram which illustrates the linear manufacturing process of how to make
cheese. Overall, the process consists of seventeen steps, commencing with fresh milk,
followed by many chemical and physical stages, and culminating with the completion
of fermented and ripened cheese.
Regarding the first nine phases of making raw cheese, there are two ways of
processing unpasteurized milk. One of which is to use a set of pasteurization and
sterilization machines, before the milk undergoes another procedure of standardization
and filtration to eliminate all the impurities. This liquid then is poured into a huge
tank, along with rennet which is a type of enzyme fermentation and microorganisms to
inoculate. Thereafter, that mixture starts separating through chemical reactions to
become curds and whey. Another traditional method for this fermentation is to
directly mix the raw milk with those beneficial bacteria and enzymes, thus forming the
same mixture which is then cut, stirred, and cooked.
3
Concerning the last eight stages of shaping the cheese, all redundant whey is drained
out, leaving only curds, leaving the rest which is then milled by a specialized device.
Salt is added, creating various types of fresh cheese including cottage and cream
cheese which can immediately be sold. The remaining product is poured into circular
molds. Having been pressed to again eliminate all the additional whey, they are
formed into cylindrical pieces which are then ripened before eventually becoming the
finished cheese product. (238 words)
4
Exercise 2
The diagram shows the stages involved in the process of making leather goods.
The image demonstrates different steps involved in the manufacture of leather goods
from raw animal skin. Overall, there are eleven steps, beginning with drying the skin,
processing and flattening the leather, and producing the end products.
The first six steps involve the preparation of the material for leather goods. Firstly,
after the skin is fully dried by being hung on a line, it is then delivered to the factory
by truck, where it is washed with a mixture of water and lime, followed by being
soaked in lime. Next, it is put through a flattening device with rollers and then
submerged in tannin, a combination of water and vegetable matter.
The end products are the outcome of the remaining stages. After receiving the product
from the previous step, it is polished and transported by lorry again to the textile
factory. This is where the polished leather is fabricated into various types of leather
goods such as shoes, bags and balls, ready to be distributed to customers. (166 words)
5
Exercise 3
The diagram below shows the various stages involved in publishing a book.
The picture demonstrates various steps involved in the publication of a book. Overall,
there are nine stages before a book is publicly released, beginning with the writing of
the book, followed by various legalisation and editorial processes, and ending with the
distribution to the bookstores.
6
The first four steps describe how a particular publication is chosen. The process
commences with drafts being written by the author. When the final is finished, it is
sent to several publishing houses. After being thoroughly studied by editors, a contract
is signed with a publisher and the book is ready for the production stage.
The remaining steps involve the editing of the reading material, which begins with the
design stage of the book’s layout. When the final design is approved, the pages of the
book will be printed out. After this, the binding process finishes the production cycle
of a book. Finally, copies of the book will be delivered to bookshops for distribution
to readers. (161 words)
7
Exercise 4
The diagram below describes how stormwater is recycled in an Australian city.
The diagram illustrates how rainwater is reused in an Australian metropolis. Overall,
there are nine steps in the process, starting with collecting water and ending with
pumping it for the utilisation of Australian people.
The process commences with stormwater being collected in sewers before funneling it
through a tube which leads to a water recycling plant. In the factory, storm water
undergoes a four-stage purification process. The first phase begins with plastic and
rubbish being removed. Following this, the recycling process continues with the
removal of small particles, followed by the filtration of bacteria and viruses, in the
third stage. The elimination of unwanted molecules and salt is conducted in the final
stage.
Subsequently, chlorine, at a concentration level of 4 mg/l, is added for water
disinfection after which the water is stored in a water tank. The process concludes
with the water being pumped to Australian end-users for consumption. (150 words)
8
Exercise 5
The diagram shows the movement of carbon on and around the atmosphere.
Given is the diagram illustrating how carbon moves in and around the environment.
Overall, the carbon movement around the earth includes two major factors which are
natural and human-made. It, additionally, has to go through a cyclical process which is
also rather complex.
Plant and animal species are the two natural factors of this movement. The former use
sunlight to produce food in order to facilitate the process of photosynthesis that leads
to the release of CO2. The trees, in addition, emit this gas into the air and underground
surfaces through respiration in which the trees’ roots play a crucial part.
Furthermore, animals’ respiration also contributes to the production of CO2; it,
subsequently, returns to earth by the means of rainfall. The discharging of carbon,
additionally, is accounted for the decayed carcasses and waste products as well as the
natural energy sources which, then, will be absorbed into the water and underground
levels.
9
In terms of anthropogenic factors, the two major culprits for the emission of carbon
dioxide are exhaust gas from vehicles and industrial activities. Factory wastes,
moreover, are responsible for the amount of CO2 diluted in water. (189 words)
10
Exercise 6
The diagram shows how chocolate is produced.
The pictorial diagram illustrates different stages of making chocolate. Overall, the
process requires ten steps in total, beginning with initial harvesting of ripe pods,
11
followed by physical and chemical transformation, and finally producing the liquid
chocolate.
The first five steps involve preparing cacao pods to be processed. Firstly, ripe red pods
are collected from cacao trees which are planted in different regions around the world,
namely South America, Africa, and Indonesia. Next, the harvested pods are cut in
order to separate white cocoa beans from the pods. Following that, the beans are
placed on leaves for fermentation. In the next step, the fermented beans are dried
under the sunlight before being packed in large bags for transportation.
The remaining steps involve processing the pods. The process continues with the bags
being loaded onto trains or trucks for delivery to a factory. Subsequently, the beans
are roasted at a high temperature, after which they are crushed in a machine and the
outer shells are removed. Finally, the inner part is pressed to form liquid chocolate.
(180 words)

Exercise 7
Given is a diagram which illustrates the linear manufacturing process of instant
noodles. Overall, the mass-produced process comprises eight steps, commencing with
13
the delivery of raw materials, followed by many physical and chemical stages, and
culminating with the packaging of final products.
Looking at the first four steps of kneading and shaping the noodles, flour which is
transported by truck from a storage silo is then mixed with oil and water by a
specialized machine, before being formed into dough sheets by many rollers. The
dough is then cut lengthways to become fresh noodles, prepared for the next phases.
Regarding the last four stages of cooking and packaging the noodles, those noodles
now are formed into discs, then fried in oil before being dried. Subsequently, they are
placed in cups, along with some vegetables and spices added to give them a distinctive
taste. Thereafter, those cups are labeled and sealed for the best preservation, ready to
be consumed. (158 words)
14
Exercise 8
The diagram shows how to produce perfume.
The sketch illustrates the method of manufacturing perfume. Overall, there are four
steps involved in the manufacture of perfume, beginning with the boiling of water,
followed by vaporizing oil from plant matter, and ending with mixing the essential oil
with condensed water.
Vaporized oil is the product of the first two stages of the process, in which an airtight
cooker containing water is placed directly on a heat source. The boiled water produces
hot steam which is then transferred through a tube into the bottom compartment of
another container. In this step, the steam works as a vaporizer, using its heat to extract
essential oil vapor from the plant raw material, which is placed in the middle section
of the container.
Perfume is the result of the final processes, which begins with the vaporized essential
oil gathered from the last step being redirected to a condensing device. During this
step, the vapor is condensed and then collected by a wire, producing essential oil in
liquid form. Finally, the oil comes out as droplets and is mixed with condensed water.
