1.0 Introduction
Over time, changes in customer behavior, technological advancements, and changes
in the retail sector have all contributed to a substantial evolution in the online
shopping scene. The conventional marketing structure and worldview have been
fundamentally changed by the internet. The Internet has been used as a marketplace
where buyers and sellers may exchange information, goods, and services without
restriction as to time or place, in addition to acting as a communication medium.
1.1 What is online shopping?
The act of making purchases of products and services via the Internet is
referred to as online shopping or e-commerce. Online shopping platforms are
websites, software, or apps that facilitate the process by providing a virtual
marketplace for interaction between customers and vendors. Many different
products are available on online shopping sites, taking into account the income
levels of users.
Online shopping has developed a culture of customer satisfaction in recent
years. Customers can find their desired products by browsing the websites or
application’s search engine. They can then add their desired products to their
virtual shopping cart and proceed to checkout. A payment transaction will be
made and confirmed depending on the payment method, then there will be an
order confirmation and online receipt. The products will then be packed and
shipped out to the location the customers stated during the purchase, and within
the estimated time set by the platform.
Online shopping may be considered the greatest innovation in recent years. It is
vastly different from the typical traditional shopping methods the masses once
were familiar with. Online shopping brings convenience, reduces hassle, and
most importantly brings greater deals and prices to the general population.
Customers can visit
Lazada, Taobao, Zalora, and Shopee
1.2 The Sudden Rise in Usage of Online Shopping Platform (?)
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, people were restricted from going out
to shop for daily necessities due to movement control orders (MCO) enforced by
the governments, which made it necessary for people to stay at home.
Therefore, people began to use online shopping to fulfill their needs. The
greatest advantage of the online shopping platform is the convenience it
provides. Customers are able to shop at any time and from any location. People
find this to be very practical as they do not have to go to physical stores as well
as stand in queues. Customers can purchase whenever it is convenient for them
because the e-commerce site is open 24 hours.
Online shopping has slowly increased in popularity for a couple of reasons. There are
definitely external factors such as the price increase of gas, the difficulties of walking into
traditional stores, and problems that arise as well as associated with shopping complexes
are catalysts that incline consumers to shop online.
When it comes to shopping online, consumers can obtain comprehensive information about
the item of interest, along with the ratings and feedback given by existing customers. One is
no longer restrained from asking friends and families to help buy certain items as there are
various product reviews on the platform that provide opinions about the item.
These online shopping platforms contain a wide range of products, with various types of
quality to cater to different consumer levels. URL:

1.3 Chosen Online Shopping Platform
The online shopping platforms we are focusing on in this study are Shopee
and Lazada.
1.3.1 Shopee
*****Shopee is one of the most popular and often-used online stores among the
millennial generation in Malaysia. Shopee was launched in Singapore in 2015.
It is a platform created especially for the region to provide customers with a
dependable payment and logistical support system. Shopee was ranked as
one of Malaysia's top marketplace websites in September 2023, per the most
current assessment. According to Tech in Asia, it is one of the five unsettling e-
commerce start-ups of 2015. Shopee opened up a consumer-to-consumer
(C2C) market in Malaysia in June 2015. The business provides a large
selection of goods, safe payment options, and cutting-edge shopping
experiences.
As a popular online shopping platform, it has partnered with brand
ambassadors like Blackpink, Got7, and Cristiano Ronaldo to promote its
platform globally. Users can conveniently buy and sell products anytime,
anywhere, with the added benefit of checking product information, ratings, and
price comparisons from multiple traders. It has rigorous laws and regulations in
place to safeguard traders and users against fraud. The e-commerce market's
information density makes pricing and costs more transparent, allowing
consumers to know prices and merchants' genuine expenses. While pricing
and cost transparency benefits consumers, corporations may be reluctant to
reveal this information, limiting strategic objectives. Online retailers, on the
other hand, might benefit from pricing discrimination since they can target
different target groups and earn favorable feedback. This also aids in product
differentiation in terms of price, brand, and quality.

1.3.2 Lazada
Lazada is a multinational e-commerce corporation and one of Southeast Asia's top e-
commerce companies. It serves 560 million customers through its marketplace
platform, with the help of 155,000 sellers and 3,000 brands. According to the most
recent study, Lazada was listed as one of Malaysia's top two marketplace websites in
September 2023. The largest selection of products is available on Lazada. Lazada
sells everything from consumer electronics to household goods, clothes, and
consumables. Lazada optimizes the user experience by offering a variety of payment
options and comprehensive customer service. Lazada's business strategy has
developed over time, converting to a marketplace where third-party retailers can offer
their products.
Lazada, a well-known e-commerce site in Southeast Asia, was established in 2012
by Maxmillian Bittner. Rocket Internet created Lazada Group in Singapore in 2012 in
order to expand on the Amazon.com model of operation in Southeast Asia. “Go
Where Your Heart Beats” is the slogan of Lazada. The primary mission of Lazada is
to open up Southeast Asia to the globe and give local businesses access to the
global market. Lazada operates in six countries: Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia,
Indonesia, Philippines, and Singapore. In 2016, Lazada became the regional flagship
of Alibaba Group and is supported by the outstanding technological infrastructure of
Alibaba. In 2018, Lazada launched LazMall which set a new standard in retail.
LazMall provides customers with a 15-day return policy, a speedy delivery
assurance, and a 100% product authenticity guarantee. Customers can shop for a
variety of branded goods from authorized wholesalers and merchants of global and
local brands on LazMall. Telephones, computers, and electrical appliances are just a
few examples.
Lazada had net operating losses of $152.5 million in 2014 on net revenues of $154.3
million. Understanding client preferences and expanding online shopping usage, which is
now at 1% compared to 10% in the US, are two challenges for Lazada. Other challenges to
overcome include unreliable delivery, particularly in remote areas, and a shortage of
payment cards. URL: https://www.lazada.com/en/about/
1.4 Objective of study
According to the available sources, it is evident that younger adults,
specifically those between the ages of 18-25, are actively engaging in online
shopping on platforms like Shopee and Lazada, with dominance over other
age groups in terms of participation in e-commerce activities.
The purpose of this study is to find out which online shopping platform is most
preferred by youths or adults aged 18 to 25. We are conducting research in
order to offer insightful analysis and suggestions. The elements and factors that
affect customers’ satisfaction with Lazada and Shopee are what we wish to
examine. We are also examining how closely these two platforms’ relationships
to customer satisfaction are related. With the goal of comparing customer
satisfaction with these two platforms and to see if this influences their choices
to use the platforms to make purchases, we created a Google Forms survey.
In this research, we will look at factors such as customer service, shipping
duration, payment alternatives, simplicity for customers, and more. It is of
pivotal importance that we investigate the underlying reasons for young
people’s preferences. This gives us the opportunity to learn more about the
current market, which is essential for continuing to succeed in e-commerce. Are
they drawn to customer service, discounts, convenience, or some other
aspects?
This research matters because it will shed light on the consumer behaviors of
younger adults and provide valuable insights assisting retailers online in
retailers better understanding the therapeutic target demographic Shopee and
Lazada to their better marketing tailor strategies their effective services and
improve customer satisfaction among this demographic group.
1.5 Research Question
o Does gender have an impact on e-commerce platforms?
o How do these platforms benefit consumers in a timely manner?
o Does promotion affect the consumers' purchasing decisions?
2.0 Methodology
Primary data were used in this study.
2.1 Subject of Study
To get various perspectives and accurate findings of the desired outcomes, data
was gathered through an online survey tool. The main targeted audience will be
teenagers in the age range of 18 to 25 years old with experience as Shopee and
Lazada users in Malaysia. Random sampling technique was used in this
research to gather information about preferred online shopping platform
2.2 Research Instrument
With internet access and today's modern technology, an online survey tool - Google
Forms has been used. Drop-down and multiple-choice question was generated using
this tool. Other than that, we have also used Microsoft Excel - a spreadsheet editor
designed to simplify work hassle. The data response gathered was then transferred to
this spreadsheet. It can also filter specific data needed during the data interpretation
part. This made it simple for us to tally and examine our data as percentages.
2.3 Category Chosen
The category chosen is Customer Satisfaction. Hence, the questions will be generated
revolving around this category.
2.4 Questionnaire Development
The questions designed in this questionnaire are based on the category of customer
satisfaction on Shopee or Lazada. We have categorized the question into customer
service, delivery time period, accuracy and relevance of search results, review,
authentic guarantee, user-friendliness, payment option, promotion, new user discount,
and free gift.
Prior to the distribution of the survey, the questions generated were first sent and
reviewed by our beloved English Lecturer, Mr.Seevalingam Ramasamy for further
inspection.
2.5 Questionnaire Distribution
Once the questionnaire is completed, it is then distributed to the public to fill up. The link and
QR code of the survey was sent to various college groups via WhatsApp, as well as on
social media platforms like Instagram and Xiaohongshu. Other than that, It is also
exchanged with other students from various campuses and colleges in order to prevent
biased opinions between the 2 platforms.
2.6 Data Collection Period
The duration of the data collection period begins from the 1st of September to the 15th of
October 2023. The collection period lasts a span of 1.5 months.
2.7 Data Validation
To further analyze the data collected, pie and stacked bar charts are generated from the
survey. This can simplify the process of comparison between the 2 platforms.
3.0 Findings
We have collected data from 100 respondents, including 50 males and 50 females.
Their average age is between 18 to 25 years old, and they have different total household
incomes. This also allows us to obtain more accurate data on online shopping platforms.
The interpretation of data can be classified into a few categories: Demographic, App
Usage Frequency, Choice of Platforms, Customer Service, Time, Relevance of Search
Results, Reviews, Product Authenticity, User-Friendliness, Payment Options, Deals, User
Discounts, and Freebies.

monthly income of the 100 respondents.

Questionnaires were handed out to young people and adults between the ages of 18
and 25. The demographic with the most responses is 19 years old (49 responses),
however, the age group receiving the fewest responses is 24 (2 responses). This
indicates that teenagers at the age of 19 frequently purchase online.
3.1.2 Gender
The respondents were separated into 50 males and 50 females in order to ensure
the accuracy of the data obtained.
3.1.3 Household Total Monthly Income
The most occurring data would be respondents having a household total monthly
income of RM 9,001 and above, the frequency for this range is 31.
3.1.4 App Frequency

purchase once or twice each month.

satisfied with the customer service of the platform they preferred.
3.2.1 Interpretation and Results

disagrees with the rest.

there is 89.33% satisfaction with Shopee’s customer service. There are also 8 respondents
who responded otherwise.
Shopee’s percentage of satisfaction is 89.33%, though it is lower than Lazada’s 96%, the
number is made out of 75 respondents. So its percentage is more reliable and valid.
On the contrary, Lazada’s satisfaction percentage consists of only 25 respondents, a fraction
of Shopee’s total respondents. Although its percentage is higher than Shopee's, it may not
be suitable to be used as a reference for potential customers in the future.

buy an item or service on a platform. Gaining the trust of customers may be
facilitated by being a reliable and trustworthy merchant.

time period. However, both of the Online shopping platforms do have up to 50% agreement
so that means both online shopping do have a sharp delivery time period.

and engaged. If customers can rapidly get the information they need, users are more
likely to continue and repeat the search procedure.

indicate that Shopee's search engine may be more user-friendly.

first. This provides a sense of trust and security for the customers. It is also a method
by which customers can write down their genuine opinions about the items.

allowing a broader variety of products to be exhibited to customers in a short period of time.
In addition to offering customers a great deal of ease, this makes profit for the e-commerce
platform. These findings give online shopping platforms a clear picture of their strengths and
weaknesses. This can reduce the cost of production such as rental, utility, cleaning fees, and
many more.
Therefore, it is crucial for Lazada and Shopee to continually innovate and improve their
offerings in order to meet the demands of young customers and thrive in the competitive
market. Shopee's success can be attributed to various factors such as its attractive

Chosen Online Shopping Platform
The online shopping platforms we are focusing on in this study are Shopee and Lazada.
The business provides a large
selection of goods, safe payment options, and cutting-edge shopping experiences.

Lazada's business strategy has
developed over time, converting to a marketplace where third-party retailers can offer their products.
Telephones, computers, and electrical appliances are just a few examples.
URL: https://www.lazada.com/en/about/ 1.4 Objective of study

shopping on platforms like Shopee and Lazada, with dominance over other
age groups in terms of participation in e-commerce activities.
The purpose of this study is to find out which online shopping platform is most

order to offer insightful analysis and suggestions. The elements and factors that

to customer satisfaction are related.
Are
they drawn to customer service, discounts, convenience, or some other aspects?

o How do these platforms benefit consumers in a timely manner?
o Does promotion affect the consumers' purchasing decisions?
We have categorized the question into customer
service, delivery time period, accuracy and relevance of search results, review,
authentic guarantee, user-friendliness, payment option, promotion, new user discount, and free gift.
Prior to the distribution of the survey, the questions generated were first sent and
reviewed by our beloved English Lecturer, Mr.Seevalingam Ramasamy for further inspection.

Usage Frequency, Choice of Platforms, Customer Service, Time, Relevance of Search
Results, Reviews, Product Authenticity, User-Friendliness, Payment Options, Deals, User Discounts, and Freebies. 3.1 Demographic

the accuracy of the data obtained.
