ETIQUETTE TIPS in Vietnam
Are you thinking about taking a trip to Vietnam? Before you go, it's a good idea to learn
about some social behaviour when you meet with the local people. Take a look at these
important tips.
Greeting people
Vietnamese people are very polite and enjoy meeting new people. When you greet a
Vietnamese person, you can use a handshake or bow your head slightly or just smile.
Learning to say xin chào (hello) or cảm ơn (thank you) in Vietnamese is a good start.
Being a Good Guest
When you visit a family, bring a gift like a cake, fruit or flowers, but never bring
anything in the colour black. When you enter the house, take off your shoes and leave
them outside the door. Make sure to greet the older members of the family first. Wait for
the family to show you where to sit because the elderly usually sit first. It is rude to
refuse food or drinks, so accept it to show your politeness.
Eating food
Mealtime is very important in Vietnamese culture. Most meals are shared in the middle
of the table with a rice bowl and chopsticks for each person. Pass dishes around the table
with your right hand or both hands. In Vietnam, it is common to wait for the oldest
person to eat first to show your respect.

In Malaysia, it is important to show respect for the local culture and customs. Here are
some etiquette tips that travellers should keep in mind before visiting Malaysia:
+ Dress appropriately: Malaysians generally dress conservatively, especially in religious
sites. It is best to dress modestly and avoid wearing revealing clothing.
+ Greetings: Men should not shake hands with women unless the women extend their
hands first. It is important to use the right hand when shaking hands.
+ Table manners: Malaysians often eat with their hands, but utensils are also commonly
used. When eating with your hands, it is important to use only your right hand, as the left
hand is considered unclean.
