Lesson plan:
The class consists of 20 students from the age of 11 to 13 years old.
English level: Upper – Intermediate
Time: Approximately 60 minutes (From 8 a.m to 9 a.m)
Topic: Gerunds & Infinitives: The differences in meaning Lesson aims and objectives:
1. Identify verbs that are followed by gerunds / to-infinitives
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the different meanings gerunds and to-infinitives
of the following verbs such as forget, remember, regret and stop
3. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to distinguish the meaning of several
special verbs depending on whether they are followed by a gerund or infinitive.
Materials: Student's book, workbook, notebook and whiteboard. Teaching plan:
8:05: Warm-up activity: Introduction: (5 mins)
Aim: Review verbs that are followed by either a gerund or an infinitive with no change in meaning. 1.1.
T ask Ss what food they like to eat and write their answers on the white board,
which helps Ss to review the vocabulary as well as the structure.
“What food do you like to eat the most?” 1.2.
T shows Ss some possible responses such as “I like to eat candy.” Or “I like eating candy.” 1.3.
Asking for some volunteers and reward those Ss who stand up and answer with couragements.
Eliciting more examples from students, encouraging them to share their personal
experiences in these examples with their classmates.
8:10: Presentation (10 mins) : Introducing another type of verbs that change their
meaning depending on whether they are followed by a gerund or an infinitive.
"to stop", "to remember”, "to regret" and "to forget".
E.g1: To stop + to infinitive means to stop what you are doing to do something else. (Infinitive of purpose)
E.g2: To stop + gerund means to stop an ongoing action.
8:20: Encourage students to read the text about a birthday party in order to find examples of: Forget+infinitive. Forget+gerund. Remember+infinitive. Remember+gerund.
8:30: Eliciting examples from students, and then explaining the meaning. E.g: .......
1.1. Forget+infinitive: forget to do something.
1.2. Forget+gerund: forget something that happened in the past.
2.1. Remember+infinitive: to remember to do something
2.2. Remember+gerund: to remember something that happened in the past.
8:40 – 9:00: Checking understanding:
1. Written controlled practice:
Encourage students to work individually and to complete each sentence with a
gerund or an infinitive in their workbooks:
1) You need to stop (try) ..................to do everything at once.
2) We forgot (buy) ..............flowers, so we stopped (pick up) .................some on the way to the party.
3) I will never forget (travel) ..................abroad for the first time.
4) I remember (celebrate).........................holidays with my family when I was young.
5) If I forget (send) .....................a card for a friend's birthday. 2. Oral controlled practice:
Encourage students to work in pairs to discuss with each other ......
