History

The first kind of ice cream was made
in China almost three thousand years
ago. It was a mixture of snow, milk
and rice. From China, the recipe spread
to Europe. The Emperor Nero of Rome
enjoyed a frozen dessert that was a
mixture of snow, honey and fruits.
In Asia, the Mughal Emperors used
their horsemen to bring snow from the
mountains to Delhi (Delhi can get very
hot!) The ice was mixed with flavours
and was then used in fruit sorbets.
When the Italian duchess, Catherine
de Medici married Henry II of
France, she brought flavoured sorbet
recipes to France. Her Italian chefs
created different flavour fruit ice for
each day of the wedding celebrations.
Ice cream arrived in England from
France. King Charles II, built an ice
house in the centre of London and was
the first British monarch who is known
to have eaten ice cream. Until the
1800’s ice cream remained a delicacy
enjoyed only by the rich.
Ice cream came to America from Europe.
In 1832, White House chef Augustus
Jackson figured out how to package
ice cream in tin cans to distribute to
ice-cream parlours. He was named the
‘Father of Ice Cream’.
Technological advances made ice cream
production possible. In 1843, the ice
cream machine was introduced in
England and America. This consisted
of a wooden bucket that was filled
with ice and salt and had a handle
which rotated.
Today there are so many different
flavours of ice cream, you can pretty
much name any flavour and there
will be an ice cream of it. The most
popular flavours are vanilla, chocolate,
strawberry and mint.
Interesting Fact
The first ‘refrigerators’ were created
by mixing salt with ice. Mixing salt
with ice reduces the freezing point.
You can achieve temperatures lower
than -14°C. This was used to keep ice
cream frozen.
