The Llangollen Railway
I got up at 6 a.m. to take the 7 a.m. train from Cardiff, where I live, to
Llangollen, a popular tourist town in North Wales.
I visited Llangollen to ride its steam train. This old type of train gets its
power from heated water – not electricity, like modern trains. The
journey is popular with tourists, because it feels like you are travelling
in a different century. However, it costs more than a short journey on
a normal train: the cost of an adult ticket is £16.00 (although it is only
£8.50 for children).
The railway line was built in the 19th century because there were coal
mines in the mountains near the town, and people needed to take
materials and get to work there. Another reason was that tourists
began visiting Llangollen more, to see places like the local castle. So,
in the 1840s, plans were made to build a train line, the Llangollen
railway, to help more people access the area.
The line opened on 1 December 1861. At this time, it only carried
materials to the coal mines. Passengers couldn’t ride the train until 2
June 1862. Later, in 1865, a new part was built so that people could
visit more places. The railway closed for around 10 years in 1965 for
financial reasons but opened again in 1972 as a tourist attraction.
To get here, it took me around two and a half hours on the train from
Cardiff and then another half hour by bus, but the journey was worth
it. I saw beautiful countryside and fascinating historical sites, and it
was a lot of fun to ride a train in the same way as people did in the
past!
If you want to visit, trains are limited, leaving Llangollen station at
9.45 a.m., 12.45 p.m. and 4 p.m. They return one hour later. Book
your trip today!
1 The writer took a train which does not use electricity like most trains.
2 It costs £ for children to ride the steam train.
3 The idea to open the Llangollen railway developed in the s.
4 The first were able to use the railway on 2 June 1862.
5 The train from Cardiff takes over hours to get to North Wales.
6 You can’t take the train until in the morning.
