US GOVERNMENT ON THE VERGE OF SHUTDOWN
The US government has avoided a federal shutdown after both House and Senate agreed on a
short-term funding deal.
A bill ensuring funding until 17 November received overwhelming support, and was signed into
law by President Joe Biden minutes before a deadline.
However, it was stripped of any new aid for Ukraine for its war against Russia - a key Democrat
demand.
A government shutdown, which would place tens of thousands of federal employees on furlough
without pay and suspend various government services, was due to begin at 00:01 ET (04:01
GMT) on Sunday.
Summary
1. Piece 1
The United Nations has conceded that it has overestimated the number of people suffering
from hunger worldwide. But a new study has shown that about 870 million people are still
chronically undernourished, a figure described as 'entirely unacceptable'
2. Piece 2
Although the fight against global hunger and undernutrition has made some progress,
millions still suffer from hunger. The U.S. Government prioritizes increasing economic
opportunities for women as a strategy to combat global hunger and closing the gender gap in
agriculture can significantly reduce undernourishment.
3. Piece 3
The crisis in the Sahel region continues as it experienced food insecurity and conflict in 2012,
affecting 18.7 million people. The United States has provided significant humanitarian aid,
amounting to over $150 million, to alleviate the situation.
