Policy 4:
As tensions between the United States and China were aggravated by Covid-19
pandemic, The Trump administration and Quad Plus have been working together to
move their production and supply chain away from China.
As Reuters reported, The United States is pushing to create an alliance of “trusted
partners” named the “Economic Prosperity Network,” which would include
companies and civil society groups operating under the same set of standards on
everything from digital business, energy and infrastructure to research, trade,
education and commerce.
On March 20, QUAD countries, including Australia, India, Japan and the US, met
online to support each other during the Covid-19 pandemic. Interestingly, the
meeting included New Zealand, South Korea and Vietnam. The "Quad Plus" later
met on March 27 .The group not only discussed about the Covid-19 pandemic , but
also discussed the ways to recover economics.
On April 29, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that The U.S. government is
working with Australia, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Vietnam to
“move the global economy forward,” These discussions include “how we
restructure ... supply chains to prevent something like this (disruptions caused by
the Covid-19 pandemic) from ever happening again,” Pompeo said.
In the end of April, Colombian Ambassador Francisco Santos was in discussions
with the White House, National Security Council, Treasury Department and U.S.
Chamber of Commerce about a drive to encourage U.S. companies to move some
supply chains out of China and bring them closer to home.
The pandemic has highlighted China's key role in the supply chain for generic
drugs here that account for the majority of prescriptions in the United States. It has
also shown China's dominance in goods like here the thermal cameras needed to
test workers for fevers, and its importance in food supplies.
Recently, the United States has repeatedly taken drastic steps to move U.S
production and supply chain dependency away from China.On its report on May
4, Reuters said that the Trump administration is “turbocharging” an initiative to
remove global industrial supply chains from China as it weighs new tariffs to
punish Beijing for its handling of the coronavirus outbreak.Meanwhile, Nikkei
has reported that Apple will produce about 3 to 4 wireless headphones
(Airpods) in Vietnam in first quarter of 2020.
