PROFESSIONALISM IN TRANSLATION WORK
Professionalism is one of the essential elements in every
profession, every industry. In particular, the intepreter is considered a
profession that must always ensure the translation style.
1. Agile, confident and dynamic.
If you want to become a good interpreter, the first and most
necessary thing is to be confident in your ability.
Interpreters need to stand in front of a crowd to do their work. If
you are not confident, you will always have the fear of whether
you have translated correctly or have made a mistake. That make
you confused and distracted, leading to many negative effects in the results.
Besides, the agility to handle the situation is also a must when
doing this job. Interpreting is a profession that often involves
risks. Lack of situation skills can significantly affect the
reputation of the interpreter. Therefore, a good interpreter is one
who knows how to make good use of his abilities to solve problems quickly.
2. The ability to concentrate and have a good memory.
Temporary memory is one of the important skills in the work of
interpreters. One of the fears of a novice interpreter is that the
memory surrenders to the speaker's "huge" amount of
information. It is impossible to pay too much attention to the
speaker's words and try to record all the information. The speed
of taking notes can hardly keep up with the speed of speaking.
Countless accidental deaths can happen during listening and
taking notes if the interpreter is not subtle enough to pay
attention to the speaker's message. . So, instead of trying to
memorize all the information, we can observe the speaker's
gestures, remembering only the key information or phrases.
3. Manners and discipline.
Professionalism in manners, discipline and punctuality are very
important for all professions, not only the translation industry.
Costume is one of the important parts that translators need to pay
attention to. Interpreters should wear modest, formal, non-
flaunting and revealing business attire. T-shirts and jeans are
taboo for interpreters, but in an event related to entertainment,
you can choose a more fashionable, sexy outfit.
On the other hand, in order to provide a professional interpreting
service, interpreters must always maintain a gentle demeanor, a
proper attitude and be able to control all situations. There is a
common convention that interpreters must understand that is the
position of an interpreter. The position of an interpreter is clearly
specified to be the left side of the customer, so stand a little
behind the object being interpreted, especially do not obscure the image of the main character.
Punctuality is a very important thing that any interpreter must
have. interpreters arriving late will be considered unprofessional.
Therefore, the interpreter should arrive 30 to 45 minutes earlier
than the translation session to have a professional appearance, as
well as to be better prepared for the translation.
