The Reflection Paper assignment is a crucial aspect of the English Linguistics and Literature program at Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Through this assignment, students are tasked with critically analyzing and reflecting upon their learning experiences, insights gained, and challenges encountered throughout the course. Students are encouraged to explore their personal growth, academic development, and evolving perspectives on language and literature. By engaging in reflective writing, students deepen their understanding of course materials, enhance their self-awareness, and cultivate lifelong learning skills. The Reflection Paper serves as a platform for students to express their thoughts, insights, and aspirations within the context of their English linguistic and literary studies.

[Challenging and promising university life]
Attending university is not only an expectedly new and fascinating journey but also a
real challenge to each of us as we must adapt to loads of things. Having considered this,
USSH organizes Major Orientation courses to instruct students on their responsibilities and
help them prepare for university life. Through the curriculum, I have achieved the basic
knowledge with essential soft skills and the ability to know what I should prepare and create
an effective plan that leads to my success in school and my future life.
Major Orientation courses show us a clear vision of the new environment, starting
with generalizing the syllabus curriculums by introducing the faculty, the number of
compulsory credits, and the specific orientation of each Specialization. On the other hand,
they clarify learning and ethical standards and encourage students to be disciplined and
consistent. We can determine our strengths and the reasons for choosing this university and
faculty through reflection papers. We set goals and have the instructions to achieve them.

I expect to experience an enthralling life after I have listened to my mentor’s detailed
descriptions. I have heard of the difficulties of Philosophy, which encourages me to focus
more on studying. On the other hand, I am fond of English Translation & Interpreting, one of
the three specializations. However, we can experience the core courses of these three
specializations, which is a chance for us to know which suits us most. It is still complex to
select elective courses as they are all promising and can expand our chances of finding jobs.
The best parts are internships and doing scientific research because I have never done them.
It is also practical to introduce the vision, missions, and core values of the Faculty of
English Linguistics and Literature because that can set a boundary of what we can and should
do. One thing I absolutely appreciate during the courses is the emphasis of soft skills’
importance and ways to improve our abilities. I had the chance to practice them as we were in
class, created an effective study plan, did some presentations, and filled in reflection papers.
After completing those tasks, I gradually understand how communication or time
management skills affect our lives.
Major Orientation courses clarify my vision by identifying what I should prepare for
the new learning environment. First, I need to investigate my statement to know what I have.
I think confidence and the ability to adapt quickly are some of my strengths. Joining
Journalism and Media Club in high school and being a nonprofessional writer for five years
are also beneficial. However, I can be persistent and lazy, which is my weakness. Through
these investigations, I know that I should discipline myself more. I have the potential to
succeed in many activities as I can actively learn and initiate asking lecturers. I readily apply
many effective learning methods shown in the courses. This first year, I learn Chinese to get
the HSK3 degree and learn French on Duolingo. I also intend to join some clubs to improve

my soft skills and expand my relationship. I think I also need to prepare my mind. Everything
seems strange and might be hard at first, so it would be better not to underestimate how
challenging university life can be.
In conclusion, stepping on a new path will be difficult. However, when we have
suitable methods, we can deal with it. Major Orientation courses have helped me a lot to
understand not only the faculty but also myself. Now I dare to survive and try hard, my belief
will never fade even when facing struggles.
