2.2
Step 1: Identify the competitors
The author’s product is Nike Air Presto. There are 3 styles of competitors such as direct competitor,
indirect competitor and potential competitor.
Nike Air Presto’s direct competitors are Adidas Ultra Boost and Puma Ignite. Its indirect competitors are
Asics Gel Lyte iii , Timberlake and Vans Sk8-Hi Slim. Finally, its potential competitors are Zara, LV and
H&M.
Step 2: Assessing its competitors
Competitors Adidas Ultra Boost Puma Ignite Asics Gel Lyte iii
Objectives They want to increase
the dividend payout
ratio up to 50% and
they want to return
about €1.5 billion in
the end up 2017.
(Adidas-group,2016)
Their objective is to be
the fastest company in
the world. They want
to react quickly with
the new trends, give
innovation for the new
idea for the market,
and fast solve the
problem with exactly
decision (Puma, 2016).
In 2020, they want to
increase their sale
revenue up to ¥750
million, the income
ratio increase 10% and
they also increase the
e-Commerce ¥15
billion (Asics,2016)
Strategies In order to achieve that
objectives, Adidas has
to increasing the value
of their shareholders,
understand the demand
of their customers and
becoming enduring
company.(Adidas,n.d)
They have the
strategies to get these
objectives. They
improve the quality of
their product and their
distribution channels,
they renewing their IT
department and their
facilities in the
organization.
(Puma,2016)
Focus to improve the
desire skills in order to
innovate the customers
who have enthusiasm
with sport and they
expand the business to
Japan and finding the
opportunities in the
global market. They
support and promote
the healthy life by their
intelligent technology
about sports
(Asics,2016)
Strengths & Weakness There are some
Strengths and
Weakness of Adidas
such as:
Adidas has more than
55,000 employees over
the world. With the
huge number of
employees, they could
produce more product
for customer and
There are some
Strengths of Puma such
as:
Puma has the business
over 120 countries and
they have more than
10,000 employees.
Puma could compete
with their competitors
and satisfied the
demand of customers
There are some
strengths and weakness
of Asics such as:
They were known as
the first company in
footwear industry. It
was found in 1949
about basketball shoes
(Asics,2016).
expand their business
over the world
(Statista,2016) .
Adidas is the company
which pay a huge
money on their
sponsorship with the
biggest event about
sport in the world such
as FIFA World Cup,
UEFA EURO 2012&
2016,UEFA
Champions League,
etc. They also sponsor
famous football players
such as Lionel Messi,
Xavi, David Villa
(Fifa, n.d)
There are some
Weakness of Adidas:
65% products of
Adidas were
manufactured in Asia
where has the lower
labors cost. Their
manufacturing process
depend on the Asia
countries but
customers think that
the quality of products
were manufactured in
those countries will
have the lower quality
than the products
which were
manufactured in others
religion such as Euro
or American, it is the
big concern of
customers.
The products of Adidas
have higher price more
than Nike, Puma or
Asics. For example,
The price of Adidas
Ultra Boost is $180, it
is higher than Nike Air
Presto (Adidas, 2016)
(Puma,2016).
Puma has the long-
term partnership with
Ferrari in 2011, Puma
became the supplier of
Ferrari about footwear
and accessories
(Maranello,2011).
There are some
weakness of Puma:
Firstly, their factories
in the Asian countries.
Their suppliers in those
countries such as
Cambodia have the
problems about the
wage of employees in
the factories. There are
147 strikes of
employees in
Cambodia about their
maximize wage was
too low and they want
to have more
(Dunabrata, E. and
Thui Chan P., 2013). It
affect to the
productivity process of
company and they
could not make their
target of the employees
had not worked.
Finally, Puma has the
low market share in the
industry. In 2014, the
total revenue of Puma
was about $1,56 billion
and it acquired about
3% of the industry
(Statista, 2016). It
affect to the long-term
vision of the company,
they will have less
financial ability to
manufacture their
products
Their main products
are about running and
they sponsor the some
sport event such as
NYC Marathon in
2015. By this sponsor,
customers will
understand more than
about their products
(Competitor, 2015)
Finally, this is about
the weakness of Asics:
Customer’s feedback
about the product of
Asics is not good. They
feel that theses product
has bad quality and
they do not have good
warranty (Asics,2016).
The long-term debt of
Asics is too high, it is
about $387,483
million. Asics have to
pay more money on the
interest of their long
term debt (Asic,2016)
Response The reaction of Adidas
is predictable and it is
tiger with Nike.
Because Nike and
Adidas are the big
competitors with each
other. For example, In
EURO 2016, when
Nike has sponsorship
with Ronaldo, Wayne
Rooney, Zlatan
Ibrahimovic, Adidas
also have the
sponsorship with
Gareth Bale, Paul
Pogba and Mesut Ozil
(Repucom,2016).
When Kanye West
announced that he
revealed Nike and sign
the contract with
Adidas. His rival
Drake told that he left
Adidas and join
Jordan- the brand of
Nike. This is the war
between Nike and
Adidas in the footwear
industry (Belzer
J.,2013).
Manchester United and
Chelsea are two of
biggest football club in
EPL (England Premier
League). While
Manchester United has
the sponsorship with
Adidas worth £75
million per season,
Chelsea also has the
sponsorship with Nike
worth £60 million per
season (Law M. 2016).
Puma has the selective
reaction with Nike
because they are not
strong enough to
compete with Nike and
Adidas so they just
select some activities
to response them. For
example, After Nike
has the sponsorship
with Chealsea, Puma
also has the
sponsorship with
Arsenal worth £30m
(Law M.,2016).
In 2016, when Nike
have the sponsorship
with 6 national teams
of 24 national teams
acquired 25%, Puma
also has the
sponsorship with 5
teams acquired 21%
(Scoreandchange,2016)
The response of Asics
with Nike is selective
because they are not
the biggest competitor
of Nike. In over the
world, Nike has the
slogan ‘Just do it’
(Jones R.,2015) and
Asics run the
marketing campaign
‘Want it more’
(Campaignlive ,2016).
According to step 2,Nike should attack Adidas, Puma and Asics. Because those reasons: Adidas is the
biggest competitor of Nike, they response all of activities of Nike about marketing, products, endorsement
and sponsorship. Puma also the big competitor but they just select some activities to response Nike and
they do not have enough financial resource to compete with Nike than Adidas. Finally, Asics is the also
the competitor of Nike but they have some product which different target market.
