SUMMARIZE UNITS Unit 1: Companies  Unit 1 is about companies 
The unit looks at different types of companies, such as: multinationals, dotcoms 
(online companies) and joint-stock company.

developments in technology, growth in the power of consumer groups, expansion 
of e-business, increase in shareholders power, financial scandals, transfer of money 
and jobs to cheaper countries and weakening trade unions 
The focus of the unit is on the structure of joint-stock companies in US’s economy, 
which is determined by choices. 
Useful phrases for talking about the job are taught in this unit.  Unit 2: Leadership 
Unit 2 is about leadership, which means the set of characteristics that makes a  good leader. 
The unit looks at the qualities, skills and experience that effective leaders need. 
It also looks at 2 types of management style, including: fear-based management 
and performance-based management. 
The unit describes fear-based management style, which mangers use to inspire  talent. 
Useful phrases for getting things done are taught in this unit.  Unit 3: Strategy 
Unit 3 is about strategy, which means the way in which a business carefully plans 
its actions over a period time to improve its position and achieved what it wants. 
The unit focuses on the strategy of the companies behind well-known brands like  Nike and Harley Davidson 
The unit looks at internal and external factors that a company should consider 
when it undergoes the strategic planning process.

The unit also looks at Nike’s Goddess – a cooperate strategy developed by Nike in 
order to click with female customers.

Unit 4 is about pay, which means money earned by an employee as a salary or  wage. 
The unit looks at pay, specifically executive pay. 
The unit also looks at stock options, which is used to motivate managers by 
making them part-owners of the company. 
The focus of the unit is on executive pay which is the rewards of failure with focus 
on a difficult situation at GSK.

Unit 5 is about development, which means growth or changes that make something  become more advanced. 
The unit discusses the positive and negative impacts of economic development 
The unit looks at the OECD, which provides data and statistics on a wide range of  subjects. 
The unit also looks at development and the environment with focus on a battle 
between environmentalists and supporters of the ED project in Peru. 
Useful ways for showing cause and effect are taught in this unit.  Unit 6: Marketing 
Unit 6 is about marketing, which means the business activity that involves 
finding out what customers want, using that information to design products 
and services, and selling them effectively 
The unit looks at the marketing mix, including 4 Ps: product, price, place and  promotion.

Unit 7 is about outsourcing, which means transferring work to an outside supplier 
The unit discusses the purpose of outsourcing. It is used so that a company can 
focus on its core operations. It is also used to cut costs on labor, among others 
The unit looks at advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing and offshoring 
The focus of the unit is on the next round of globalization, including: corporate 
downsizing, phases of globalization and the driving forces of offshoring.
