Two young musicians
Frank and Jimmy are music students. They live in the same house and they are good
friends but they like very different kinds of music.
Frank comes from a family of musicians. His father is the conductor of one of
England’s top youth orchestras and his stepmother gives lessons in classical guitar.
Frank is studying classical music. He can play the violin very well and he’s also
learning the viola. He practises every evening and sometimes he plays for three or four
hours. He also loves listening to classical and modern tango and plays the violin in a
modern tango group called Tangota. Tangota play once a month at a small nightclub.
Jimmy is doing a university course in pop music. He likes listening to many kinds of
music. He listens to slow music when he’s stressed, he listens to jazz when he’s tired,
and when he’s in a really good mood he listens to reggae or rock music. He loves going
to concerts but he doesn’t have a lot of money so he can’t do that very often. Jimmy’s a
big fan of Tangota but he doesn’t like listening to Frank’s violin every evening when
Frank is practising, so he listens to loud music on his headphones. Jimmy also plays in a
band. It’s a rock band called Happy Sunday. They usually get together once a week to
practise. Jimmy’s friend has a club and the band can practise there in a large room

sister’s a nurse. Their names are Harry and Liz. My parents are both teachers. I love sport. I play
football and basketball a few times a month and I watch all the best matches on TV. My favourite

Clarkson is a large town. It has more than fifty thousand people living there. It sits next to a large

go to work.
Most people live in North Clarkson. There are many trees and the streets are very broad. When
the sun shines and the children run and play in the safe streets, North Clarkson is a wonderful
place to live.
South Clarkson has a lot of shops and factories. People don't live there, but they come in the
morning to work. There is also a big stadium where the Clarkson Tigers play. On Sundays, many
people go to watch their favorite team.
At the weekend, the people from Clarkson enjoy walking along the bank of the Clark River.
They also sail small boats on the water and if there is a little wind, they fly kites in the large
park.
Every year, Clarkson grows in size because a lot of people come to live there. The government

Scotland. We share the same desk and love the same school subjects. Our favorite lessons are
Arts and Physical Education. I am very good at tennis and she is very good at volleyball. She
plays volleyball at our school team. We both have a busy life. We always get up at a half past six
and at seven o’clock her father takes us to school by car. They live next door to us, so after
school we always do our homework, walk our dogs and play together. Our classes start at half
past seven and finish at 4 p.m. Her mother is a nurse. My mother is a nurse too and they work at
the same hospital. Our fathers are both engineers but they work at different companies. On
Mondays, Selena has violin class and I have piano class. On Tuesdays and Thursdays she
practices volleyball at the school’s gym and I play tennis in our school court. Friday is my
favorite day because Selena stays overnight with us. On the weekends, we usually go to the

Pilgrims. The Native Americans taught them how to grow corn and pumpkins and beans. They
also taught the Pilgrims how to fish and hunt. The next year, the Pilgrims had a big harvest. The
Pilgrims were very thankful and grateful. The Pilgrims had a huge feast to celebrate the new
harvest and to give thanks to the Indians. The feast lasted for three days. This is how
Thanksgiving started.
Thanksgiving Day is a harvest celebration. Traditionally, it was a time to give thanks for a
big harvest. It is also a holiday to express appreciation to family and friends. This is why it is
celebrated with a big family feast.
Now, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Thanksgiving is a
time when families come together and eat a lot of food. They eat big turkeys and cranberries
and pumpkin pie. It is a day of gratitude and appreciation. Everybody talks about what they are
thankful for. Many are thankful for family, friends and good food and the good things in their
lives. What are you thankful for?
1. Pilgrims are native Americans
2. At first, Pilgrims had many difficulties in findings ways to live in the USA

Global fashion
Gillian Turner-Niles is a fashion photographer. She lives in New York and works in the
fashion capitals of the world. You can see her photographs on the pages of fashion magazines
across the world. Her clients include Gucci, Dior, Ferragamo, even the sports clothing company
Nike. But today she’s talking to me by phone from the middle of Sudan. So, what is she doing
there?
‘I’m taking photographs, of course!’ She explains, ‘I’m not taking photographs for Vogue or
anyone else. It’s like a holiday. In my business, it’s easy to forget there’s another world out there.
And I like looking at clothes in a different way when I travel.’
But in this world of global fashion, people all over the world wear the same clothes. The
businessman’s suit in Beijing is like the businessman’s suit in Berlin. And jeans and T-shirts are
almost a type of uniform these days.
‘Yes, I think that’s true in the big international cities,’ Gillian says. ‘But I’m visiting regions in

part of Africa.’

Last year my boyfriend Mark was forty and I wanted to get him a special present for his
birthday. Just before Christmas I saw tickets for a Bruce Springsteen concert for sale on the
internet. The concert was in Sheffield, about 25 miles away from where we live, and Mark is a
big fan of Bruce Springsteen so I decided to buy two tickets. They weren’t cheap – I think I paid
around £90 for each one. I wanted to surprise Mark, so I didn’t tell him about it.
On the day of the concert, I told Mark that I wanted to do some Christmas shopping in
Sheffield. We left in my car just after lunch and spent the afternoon in a big shopping centre. I
bought Christmas presents for my family and a skirt for work. Mark looked for some new jeans,
but he couldn’t find any that he liked. By the time we finished shopping it was nearly 6 p.m. and
we were hungry so we had dinner in a Japanese restaurant. After dinner we left the shopping
centre and set off on our way home. On the way we passed the concert hall and we could see the
crowds of fans outside. Mark was really surprised when I drove into the concert hall car park and
gave him the tickets!
The concert was fantastic. We danced all night and Mark took lots of photos on his mobile
phone. Afterwards we bought a concert CD. We put it on when we got in the car and we sang all
of the songs as we drove home. We didn’t get back home until nearly one o’clock in the morning
and we were both really tired, but it was a great night and Mark really enjoyed his surprise.

GLASTONBURY
Glastonbury is a pretty town in the south west of England. You can see tourists in the town
centre at any time of the year because it has some famous monuments, such as Glastonbury
Abbey and St John’s Church. It is a small, quiet town and it doesn’t have a cinema, a theatre, or a
night club.
However, every year in June, around 150,000 music fans arrive for ‘Glasto’, the world famous
Glastonbury Festival. The festival started in 1970 and takes place at Worthy Farm, around 10 km
from the town of Glastonbury. It’s four days of music from some of the world’s top performers:
singers like Beyoncé, and bands like U2 and Coldplay.
Glastonbury is very big and you can walk around and hear different music in different places.
Over 300 singers and bands come to play their music here so it has nearly everything. Rock,
reggae, and rap are some of the things you can hear, but there isn’t any classical music. The
Glastonbury Arts Festival is for people who like classical music, but that’s in August.
Glastonbury is an outdoor festival, so it’s great when the weather is good and the sun is
shining. But British summers are very changeable and it sometimes rains a lot during the festival.
However, the fans aren’t worried they sing and dance in the rain while the bands are playing.
You don’t usually see sad faces or umbrellas at Glastonbury when it rains.
It’s sometimes quite difficult to get tickets for the Glastonbury festival because lots of people
want to go to it. If you can’t get a ticket, you can always watch it on TV or on the internet, or
listen to it on the radio.
1. You can see a film at the cinema in Glastonbury.

Exercise 5: Read the passage and answer the questions Two young musicians

Clarkson is a large town. It has more than fifty thousand people living there. It sits next to a large
river, the Clark River. Every day, people take the ferry from North Clarkson to South Clarkson to go to work.
Most people live in North Clarkson. There are many trees and the streets are very broad. When
the sun shines and the children run and play in the safe streets, North Clarkson is a wonderful place to live.
They also sail small boats on the water and if there is a little wind, they fly kites in the large park.
Every year, Clarkson grows in size because a lot of people come to live there. The government
builds more houses and the streets get busier. Maybe in the future, if the town continues to grow, it will become a city!

Hi, my name is Tina. I am thirteen years old and today I want to talk about my best friend
Selena. She is my classmate and she is thirteen years old too. We attend a very big school near
On the weekends, we usually go to the
movie theater or have a picnic if the weather is good. I am the only child, I don’t have a sister but she is like a sister to me. 1. Where is their school?

Global fashion
Gillian Turner-Niles is a fashion photographer. She lives in New York and works in the
fashion capitals of the world. You can see her photographs on the pages of fashion magazines
across the world. Her clients include Gucci, Dior, Ferragamo, even the sports clothing company
Nike. But today she’s talking to me by phone from the middle of Sudan. So, what is she doing there?

Mark was really surprised when I drove into the concert hall car park and gave him the tickets!

Exercise 4: Read the text. Are the sentences True (T), False (F) or Doesn’t say (DS)? GLASTONBURY
Glastonbury is a pretty town in the south west of England. You can see tourists in the town
centre at any time of the year because it has some famous monuments, such as Glastonbury
Abbey and St John’s Church. It is a small, quiet town and it doesn’t have a cinema, a theatre, or a night club.
However, the fans aren’t worried – they sing and dance in the rain while the bands are playing.
You don’t usually see sad faces or umbrellas at Glastonbury when it rains.
It’s sometimes quite difficult to get tickets for the Glastonbury festival because lots of people
want to go to it. If you can’t get a ticket, you can always watch it on TV or on the internet, or listen to it on the radio.
