TASK 1: Study the following texts. Underline the words in
the paraphrase that show similar meaning with the
underlined words in the original. Circle the words that do
not change in both texts. Does the paraphrase have the
same meaning with the original?
Original: There has been much debate about the reasons for the industrial revolution happening
in eighteenth-century Britain, rather than in France or Germany.
Paraphrase: Why the industrial revolution occurred in Britain in the eighteenth century, instead
of on the continent, has been the subject of considerable discussion.
TASK 2: Do the 2 texts have the same meaning? Identify
the synonyms in the 2 texts. What else is changed in the
paraphrase? Circle the key word(s) that do not change in

1. TV can expose children to new ideas and information that they might otherwise not

3. Children who spend three hours a day or more in front of the TV do poorly in school,
scoring lower on both math and reading tests than children who watch some, but less,
TV.
4. Surveys taken near the end of this campaign, in March of last year, showed that well
over half of those surveyed were aware of the campaign and that 40% reported that
they were unlikely to try smoking.
5. Just three months after the campaign ended, this figure changed dramatically.
6. At the end of June, 58% of survey participants reported that they were ‘very likely’ to
smoke in the next year. At the same time, less than 30% reported awareness of the
antismoking campaign.
