How Not to Succeed in Your Job
Many magazines have articles on how to be a success, but here at Business Monthly
the Magazine for Busy Businesspeople, we thought it would be helpful if our readers knew how to fail. 8 TACB2 Lecturer: Truong Thi Thuy Step One:
Don’t come to work on time. If you want to fail at work, then don’t be on time.
Punctuality, or being where you should when you should, is a common trait of
successful people. If you don't want to succeed, be late for al of your appointments. Step Two:
Don’t ask questions. Successful people often try to learn what they don’t already
know. They ask questions if they are unsure of a situation or a procedure. If you
want to fail, make sure you keep your questions to yourself. Step Three:
Never learn new things. In order to get ahead in your career, it is necessary to
keep yourself updated on current information in your field. Information changes
quickly; if you want to be left behind, then don't keep up with the changes. Step Four:
Don’t mind your own business. MYOB, or Mind Your Own Business, means
not getting involved in office gossip. If you talk about others
behind their backs, then you can expect that others are talking about you as wel .
So if you want to fail, stick your nose where it does not belong.
1. According to the article, what does punctuality mean?
A. Having good punctuation when writing B. Being where you should C. Being successful
D. Being where you should, when you should
2. According to this article, what is true about successful people?
A. They are late, don’t ask questions, and never learn new things.
B. They are late, don’t ask questions, and try to learn new things.
C. They are late, ask questions, and try to learn new things.
D. They aren't late, ask questions, and try to learn new things 3. What does MYOB mean?
A. That you should study about business in school
B. That you should not get involved in office gossip
C. That you should prepare to own your own business
D. That you should talk a lot about other people Exercise 4

Customer Preferences: competition
As a result of recent research, we have decided to lauch a staff competition.
500 British people were recently surveyed by Sunshine Holidays about their vacation plans for
the coming summer. 100 people in each of five different age ranges were surveyed. They were
asked to indicate which countries they planned to visit out of four possible choices. The
choices given were Italy, France, Britain and Spain. It seems that as they get older, people tent
to choose not to travel overseas. As we can see from the table, the older participants chose
Britain as their first choise to visit. When asked about this choice, they gave several reasons,
including fears about health problems and access to medical care, worries about
communicating in a foreign language, and the desire to spend time with their grandchildren
during the school vacations. The youngest group of participants chose Spain as their favourite
They said it was because of Spain’s reputation as a fun and lively places with beautiful
beaches. However, overal France was the most popular destination for al age groups. This is
because of its close location to Britain.
We want to increase the number of older customers visiting Spain (target A) and the number
of younger visitors travel ing within Britain (target B). Fot this reason we are launching a staff
competition. Please submit your ideas to increase the number of customers in either target
group A or target group B. The two lucky winners wil win an al - expenses paid trip to Bermuda.

UniCorp Announces Appoitment of New Senior Vice President
New York city-based financial investment firm, UniCorp, finally announced that Donald
Branson wil be taking over as senior vice president of the European branch. The announcemen
comes after months of speculation as to who would take over the position after the retirement o
Richard Trump, who held the job for more than fifteen years. 10 TACB2 Lecturer: Truong Thi Thuy
Not surprisingly, Branson has worked as a regional director at UniCorp for the past five years.
Financial experts correctly predicted that Trump would find a replacement within the company.
At a press conference in London on Tuesday, Branson announced that he wil also be organizin
an investors’ meeting in Paris in Jan.22. “ It is both Mr. Trump’s and my wish to make this
transition go as smoothly as possible.” Je said, adding that the meeting is intended for reassuring
UniCorp investors in Europe that he is up to the task.
Although most analysts agree that Branson is a reasonable replacement, a recent 3 percent
drop in company shares reveals that this is not necessarily the case for everyone.
