Theme and rheme
Finally, we have learned about theme and rheme structure. Theme
frequently in the front position serves to present given information which has
already been mentioned somewhere in the text or understood as a common
knowledge from the particular context. Rheme is the second part of the clause
in which Theme is developed and usually contains unfamiliar information or
new knowledge that a writer assumes his/her readers do not know. In other
words, Theme is the starting point of the clause, realized by whatever element
comes first, and Rheme is the rest of the message, which provides the
additional information added to the starting point. For example: Tom likes
traveling”. In this sentence we have “Tom” which is Theme and the rest part
“likes traveling” is rheme. We can also have a look at an example in the book:
outside my window (theme) is a big lawn (rheme)”. We can simply define
Theme as a starting point of the clause message; realized by first position in
clause. Moreover, it must contain a participant, process or circumstance and
includes any element preceding the first participant, process and circumstance.
Patterns of sequencing of theme and rheme are tendencies rather than
absolutes.
