Silvana Medici, a great chef and her successful start-up beyond expectations.
Silvana’s granddaughter mentions that her grandmother, who passed away before
she was born, was amazing. She started a catering business in the 1950s to earn extra
money for her kids after her husband's death from war injuries. Her grandmother
used to be a cook for a wealthy household before and during the war years, however
in the 1950s, due to the change of society and lack of funding servants, her job
opportunity became scarce. Although she was lost, she decided to find a way to
increase her income. She was supposed to be a lucky woman to have a wonderful
cooking skill. As a result, she started making her own cakes, jams and preserves
which were very popular soon after that a few local hotels began placing orders.
Then she went on to make desserts and they were bought again by the local hotels.
One day, a man who owned a large retail business tried her food and was impressed
with its quality. He offered her an interest-free loan, which she accepted, allowing
her to invest in new kitchen equipment and hire a part-time assistant. This helped
her produce more cakes and jams and led to an increase in sales. Finally, she opened
her own shop and subsequently enlarged multiple locations throughout northern
Italy.
