Unit 7- Starter Toeic
SUBJECT – VERB AGREEMENT
Nguyên tắc chung: S số ít + V số ít (Vs/ Ves), S số nhiều + V số nhiều (V nguyen the).
1. Hai danh từ/đại từ số ít, nối liền bởi
thì phải theo sau bởi 1 động từ số nhiều: “and” - She and I friends. are - Linda and her friend going to the library. are
Nếu hai danh từ diễn đạt cùng 1 ý/1 sự kiện thì động từ chỉ là số ít.
- The lecturer and author coming to the stage. He is about 30 years old. is
- The president and CEO Mr. Smith is
2. Hai danh từ/đại từ được nối bởi “with”, “as well as”, “together with”, “along with”, “accompanied by”
thì động từ phải hòa hợp với danh từ/Đại từ thứ nhất:
- Jane with her boyfriend very tired. is - together with Tommy His family
going on holiday in Ha Long Bay. are
3. “each”, “every” + Danh từ số ít/đại từ số ít + V số ít
“each of” + Danh từ/đại từ số nhiều +V số ít:
- Each boy and girl has an English dictionary.
- Each of us gets a tin of coke.
4. Hai danh từ/đại từ được nối bằng “or/not”, “either…or/neither…nor”, “not only…but also” thì V phải
hợp với “S2” gần nhất:
- Either you or your husband is going to the meeting. - Neither I nor you are young. 5.
+ A number of Ns+ verb (số nhiều )
A number of workers are on strike.
+ The number of Nouns + verb (số ít):
The number of students is absent today
6. Cac danh từ, tuy có hình thức số nhiều (s) nhưng ngụ ý là số ít, nên chỉ hợp với động từ số ít:
+ Các môn học và các hoạt động: athletics (điền kinh), economics (kinh tế học), linguistics (ngôn ngữ học),
mathematics (toán học), politics (chính trị học)...
+ Các môn chơi, trò chơi: billiards (bi-da), checkers (cờ đam), darts (trò phóng lao trong nhà), dominoes (trò chơi đô-mi-nô)...
+ Tên một số bệnh: diabetes (bệnh tiểu đường), measles (bệnh sởi), mumps (bệnh quai bị), rabies (bệnh dại),
shingles (bệnh zona, bệnh lở ở mình), rickets (bệnh còi xương)...
- Mathematics is too difficult for them.
- Measles still strikes many Americans
+ Danh từ chỉ địa danh như: Athens, Algiers, The United States, The Philippines, Brussels…
7. Danh từ (chủ ngữ) chỉ thời gian, tiền bạc, khoảng cách, trọng lượng thì hoà hợp với V số ít:
- Ten tons of rubber is exported to Japan.
- Two years is long enough for them to separate from each other.
- Five kilometers is too far to walk.
8. Phần trăm (percentages), phân số (fractions)
+ Phần trăm/phân số + of + uncountable noun/ N số ít + verb (số ít)
- Sixty percent of waste paper is recycled.
- Three quarter of the world’s population lives
in bad living condition.
+ Phần trăm, phân số + of + plural noun + verb (số nhiều)
- Half of the students in this class come from the country.
- Less than fifty percent of students
bad at foreign language. are
9. Gerunds hay infinitives làm chủ ngữ + V số ít:
- Smoking bad for health. is - To live to struggle is .
