20220824 - Recycling - sample ielts speaking What should we recycle?
When it comes to recycling, we can recycle… Common recyclables are… Plastic Glass Paper / cardboard / boxes
Food / leftovers (uneaten food) Used oil Batteries
While they come in a variety of shapes and sizes, all batteries have two elements in common: an
electrolyte and a heavy metal. These metals are extremely harmful to the environment when not disposed
of properly. Even if they are incinerated, many of these metals are still released into the air, causing contamination. Broken ceramics
Dishes, mugs, and other ceramic items that are broken and can’t be donated might wind up (end up) in the
trash—there’s usually no way to recycle them. However, you could use them to make art projects like
mosaics. And occasionally, recycling centers that take old building materials like concrete will also take ceramics Clothes
Clothing that’s too worn (sờn, rách) for donation shouldn’t go in the trash. If it has holes, stains (vết ố), or
other severe (serious) damage (hư hỏng nghiêm trọng), you can repurpose (tái mục đích) it into rags (giẻ
lau) for cleaning the house. However, if you just want those old clothes out of your sight, send them to a
recycling service or a textile (sợi, vải) recycler - they’re not a terrible home for your damaged items. Just
make sure not to donate wet or moldy (mốc) clothing, which will go straight to the landfill.
By putting it into separate containers / bins
When it comes to re-using, we can make good use of old clothes
Selling second-hand clothes online is all the rage (=very fashionable) now
We can pass old clothes down to younger siblings
When it comes to re-using, we can make good use of notebooks and magazines about:blank 3/10 23:42 28/7/24

These can be used for craftwork projects or activities with kids.
Will you recycle in the future?
To be honest, I think, I am gonna recycle more and more in the future.
On the one hand, the systems that the government has are being refined and polished and getting better
and better, which makes it easier for me to recycle.
But also, I think there is a dire need (= an important need) for people generally to recycle more to save the environment.
So I want to do my bit (=make my contribution) to help conserve the environment and I think recycling is
gonna play a key role in doing that.
So I will undoubtedly recycle more in the future.
How will you raise awareness about recycling in your town?
Well, I think it’s really important for young people and old people alike, to learn more about recycling and how important it can be.
So I think one of the key things I would do, is I would first of all do a social media campaign, maybe with
some memes and some videos, showing people how to recycle.
That’s probably the most important thing, but then also, showing them the impact, the positive impact of
recycling, and I think that’s a really good way to do it because lots of people nowadays get their main
information through social media, so it’s a channel where we can reach them and have a bigger impact.
Yes, I think that would be my key focus, if I had an awareness campaign on the topic of recycling.
How can a nation be developed by recycling?
I think, this is an interesting question, and on the one hand, I am not sure that a nation can be developed
by recycling, but there are clear benefits to recycling.
So, I think on the one hand, you can raise the awareness and the kind of the educational level of the
general public through government campaigns to understand how to recycle and the importance of recycling.
So, that’s one clear benefit. I guess on the other hand, if we are recycling plastics and glass and other
items, non-biodegradable items, then although yes we are protecting the environment, we probably gonna
have a positive impact on industry as well.
Initially, it may have a negative impact on the economy and industry because it might be more expensive,
but in the long term it’s surely gonna make the economy stronger, because we will have sustainable
resources that we can use to develop the economy. about:blank 4/10 23:42 28/7/24

So, I guess in the long term, yes, it will help a country to develop their own economy, as well as the
general education of the general public. Part 1:
Q1. Do you practice recycling? Why or why not?
Definite! I am an untiring advocate of environmental protection - I spread awareness
about recycling in my community, and my efforts have paid off. More and more people
around me are starting to give value to conserving the environment.
Q2. Did you learn recycling when you were a child?
Yes, of course! The importance of recycling is often taught throughout school in my
country to teach children to become responsible citizens. I remember my Science
teacher asked us to create something out of recycled materials, and I made a bookshelf
out of egg trays. The project was really enlightening since we realized that even in our
own little and simple ways, we could protect our environment from destruction.
Q3. What can people do to reduce the number of tree products, like paper, in their daily lives?
Importantly, people can minimize paper products at home by going digital as much as
possible. What I mean, is instead of writing down ideas on paper, writing them into a
document on the computer. Or, like me, instead of getting bills through the mail in
paper form, getting digital notifications from the utility companies. Part 3:
Q1a. How can a nation be developed by recycling?
Direct answer: I think this is an interesting question, and on the one hand, I am not sure
that a nation can be developed by recycling, but there are clear benefits to recycling. about:blank 5/10 23:42 28/7/24

So, I think, on the one hand, you can raise awareness and the kind of the educational
level of the general public through government campaigns to understand how to
recycle and the importance of recycling.
Q1b. What may happen in future societies if people put all their waste into the
garbage and do not recycle?
In this case, if recycling were to cease, garbage would pile up (accumulate) and further
pollute the land, air, and water, leading to disease, death, and overall lower quality of
life. It is possible to see evidence of this already with the near extinction of species like pandas and tigers.
Q2. Do you think it is mainly the role of governments or individuals to make sure people recycle?
I think it is both the responsibility of individuals as well as authorities to make sure that
everyone recycles as much as possible, because only through the combined effort of
governments and people can humanity sustain its exponential population growth. I
make sure to follow government regulations on recycling, and I take extra steps to compost my organic garbage.
Q3. How has recycling changed the way individuals do their daily shopping?
Recycling has greatly influenced consumers in everyday shopping habits. Customers pay
more attention to bringing reusable bags to the store, rather than plastic bags in the
past. Many people have been paying careful attention to the packaging of goods,
making sure that they are purchasing environmentally friendly products that they can
later recycle. This is the reason I avoid Styrofoam packaging.
Q4. What else can be done in the future?
Well, in addition to what is being done these days, governments should encourage
people to use less and not over-consume. Much of today’s pollution could be avoided
by reducing the extreme consumeristic nature of society. People often buy goods that about:blank 6/10 23:42 28/7/24

they don’t really need and much of it just ends up in a landfill. Also, authorities and
people should become more aware in the future of products that they can reuse.

what happened in the past. The phrase ‘used to’ is useful here.
Extended answer: I used to socialise with my friends every day but I don’t see them so
often now that I have a baby and can’t go out in the evenings so much. We probably
meet up just a few times a month now. 10) Future
