SAMPLE ORAL TEST – SPEAKING 1
You are taking the final oral test for Speaking 1. You will totally have 7 minutes
for the test. You have NO time for preparation before speaking.
First, you will have ONE minute to introduce yourself using the following script:
- Good morning/afternoon. - My full name is … .
- I am the student of the class …. . - My student ID is …. .
- The date of is …. (the 8th of May, 2016).
- The place of test is at …. (centre).
Task 1: Pronunciation (1 minute)
Use appropriate intonation to read out loud the following questions with OR. Pay
attention to stressed syllables before and after OR
1. Did mum say that the tutor came on Sunday OR Monday?
2. Do you think it is right OR wrong to want to live on my own at this age?
3. Should I speak Japanese OR Chinese?
4. Would you like to meet John last week OR month?
5. Is modern nuclear OR traditional extended family popular nowadays?
- You are suggested to use the rising tone before OR and falling tone after OR.
Thank you. You have finished the first part of the test. Now, let’s move to the second one.
Task 2: Situation (2 minutes)
You now have ONE minute to read the task carefully and another ONE minute to do the
task as you are instructed to.
You are going to visit your close friend’s hometown. You want to know more information
about this place. Ask your sister THREE questions to make it clear about her/his hometown.
- You are supposed to use different auxiliaries (Be/Do/Have/Wil / Should…) and Wh-
words (Who/What/Where/When/Why/How/How long/How often …) to make questions.
- You are suggested to ask about (1)the name and kind of the place, (2)its location,
(3)different places of attraction there, (4)the local people’s behavior,
(5)the way to go there, (6)the weather there, (7)the place’s specialties,
(8)typical kinds of souvenir etc. - Eg.: 1. What city is your hometown? 2. Where is it located? lOMoARcPSD|45315597
3. How many places of attractions are there? What are they?
4. How do local residents behave to each other and visitors? (How are the people there?)
5. How do you get there? (What are the means of transportation to go there?)
6. What is the weather there like? 7. What specialties are there?
8. What kinds of souvenir are interesting?
You have finished the second part of the test and let’s move to part three. Task 3:
Topic Discussion (2 minutes)
Do you agree or disagree with the opinion that the mother is always closer to the
children than the father in a family. Why and why not? Present your view with clear
arguments and specific examples.
- You are expected to use the expressions below:
+ Personally, I dis/agree with this opinion for two/three main reasons.
+ Firstly/To begin with, ……. + The reason is that ……. + Moreover/Secondly ……… + For example …..
+ In short,/In conclusion, …….
- Eg.: No one can deny the role of the mother in a family. Personally, I agree that the
mother spends more time contacting to the children than the father for two main
reasons. First of all, when the child is stil small, the mother takes the most duty in
feeding him/her and taking care of the baby. Actually, the father just only helps her with
some things like talking to the baby, carrying him/her so that the mother has time to rest
and sleep after a long night staying awake and so on. Moreover, when the children are
growing up, the father seems to be more attracted to the task of earning for living to
meet the increasing demands and needs of the kids in the family. The mother,
obviously, spends most of her time preparing meals, taking children to school and get
home, mentoring them in studying and so on. In conclusion, because of the
characteristic job the mother is doing in a family, she has more chances to be closer to
the children than her counterpart. That’s the end of the test
