LESSON 8 SUPERLATIVES (SO SÁNH NHẤT)
Superlative forms of adjectives or adverbs are used to single out one thing as having a
unique quality. They compare three or more people or things. ❶Form: Cấu trúc
1. Regular superlatives: So sánh nhất có quy tắc
SHORT ADJ/ SHORT ADV-est
the most + LONG ADJ/LONG ADV
fast – fastest (1 syllable: tall, new, high)
difficult – the most difficult (>= 2
syllables: interesting, handsome,
busy – busiest (2 syllable adjective beautifully…)
ending in –y: happy, lucky, friendly, diligently – the most diligently (more
funny, lazy, friendly, pretty, lovely…) than 2 syllables) Ex:
tall- the tallest, high- highest, new- the newest, ….
interesting -the most interesting, handsome - the most handsome, the most beautifully
2. Irregular superlatives: So sánh nhất bất quy tắc
good / well – better – the best: tốt nhất
bad/badly– worse – the worst:
far – farther / further – the farthest / the furthest tệ nhất
little – less – the least: ít nhất
many / much – more – the most: nhiều nhất

Special expressions of superlatives
1. Các từ nhấn mạnh của so sánh nhất: The adverbs by far (rất nhiều) and quite (tương
đối) are used to emphasize the superlative adjective / adverb.
He was by far the worst roommate.
-At+ superlative: at least: ít nhất, at most: nhiều nhất, at best: tốt nhất, at the latest: trễ nhất.
 She is one of the largest girls in the group.
 I can drink at least six glasses of water a day.
