6
Two types of TPS
Batch processing
A system whereby business transaction are
accumulated over a period of time and prepared for
processing as a single unit or batch
On-line transaction processing (OLTP)
A system whereby each transaction is processed

transactions into a batch

Components
of TPS
The user of the IS
is the person
belonging to the
organization that
owns the transaction
system
Participants are
the people who conduct
the information
processing
People from the
environment become

as they directly enter
transaction and perform
validation

Functional Area Information Systems
Each department or functional area within an
organization has its own collection of application
programs, or information systems
Each of these functional area information
systems (FAISs) supports a particular functional
area in the organization
FAISs are Systems that provide information to
managers (usually midlevel) in the functional
areas, in order to support managerial tasks of
planning, organizing, and controlling operations.
