Have you ever felt that there aren’t enough hours in the day? These days we have
to do our jobs, look after our homes, save energy to help the environment, and do
exercise to stay healthy! Like many of us, Alex Gadsden never had enough time. He
ran a business and a home and needed to lose weight. So he decided to do something
about it. He invented the cycle washer. The 29-year-old now starts each day with a 45-
minute cycle ride. He not only feels healthier but he saves on his energy bills and does
the washing too.
He said, “It gives the user a good workout. I’ve only used it for two weeks but I’ve
already noticed a difference.” “I tend to get up at around six-thirty now and get
straight on the cycle washer. I keep in the garden, so it’s nice to get out in the fresh it
air. Afterwards, I feel full of energy. Then I generally have breakfast and a shower and I
really feel ready to start the day.” The green washing machine uses 25 litres of water
a wash, and takes enough clothes to fill a carrier bag. He normally cycles for 25
minutes to wash the clothes, and then for another 20 minutes to dry them. And it
doesn’t use any electricity, of course.
Mr Gadsden, the boss of a cleaning company, believes his machine could become
very popular. With an invention which cleans your clothes, keeps you fit and reduces
your electricity bill, he may well be right.

In 1994, Los Angeles had an earthquake that caused a power cut; suddenly the
city was in complete darkness. Some residents phoned the emergency services in a
panic and said that they had seen a giant silvery cloud in the sky. The authorities
explained that were looking at the Milky Way galaxy - it was usually hidden they
because of the city’s lights!
Next time you get the chance, look up into the night sky. What do you see?
Probably not much. Even in the countryside, the stars are harder to now. It’s all spot
because of light pollution from our towns and cities. Streetlights shine onto empty
roads and car parks; shop fronts and office blocks are lit up after everyone has gone
home, and security lights flash on and off as stray cats wander through gardens. Most
cities and towns are so bright at night that they can be seen from space!
This is not only wasting energy, but it seriously affects wildlife and the ecosystem.
After hatching on the beach, for instance, baby turtles use the sun going down on the
horizon to get back to the sea. But they get confused by the bright lights of seafront
hotels and can’t find their way. Flying insects also swarm around streetlights and birds
sing at midnight, becoming too exhausted to feed and reproduce. This causes their
numbers to decline.
Light pollution is affecting us, too. When street light creeps in through the curtains,
our sleep patterns get This isn’t just making us tired; lack of sleep can disrupted.
lead to serious illnesses such as depression, heart disease and even cancer.
Fortunately, many towns and cities are starting to dim their streetlights and switch off
unnecessary lighting. Also, once a year during ‘Earth Hour’, people in more than 7,000
cities and towns in over 150 countries switch off their lights for an hour. Why not take
part next year? You can also use low-energy bulbs and switch off lights when you
aren’t using them. All of this will help! From the beginning of time, man has marvelled
at the night sky. Let’s work together to reduce light pollution and protect our beautiful
starry skies!

He not only feels healthier but he saves on his energy bills and does the washing too.
He said, “It gives the user a good workout. I’ve only used it for two weeks but I’ve
already noticed a difference.” “I tend to get up at around six-thirty now and get
straight on the cycle washer. I keep it in the garden, so it’s nice to get out in the fresh

The authorities explained that were looki they
ng at the Milky Way galaxy - it was usually hidden
because of the city’s lights!
Next time you get the chance, look up into the night sky. What do you see?
Probably not much. Even in the countryside, the stars are harder to now spot . It’s all
because of light pollution from our towns and cities.
This causes their numbers to decline.
Light pollution is affecting us, too. When street light creeps in through the curtains,
our sleep patterns get disrupted. This isn’t just making us tired; lack of sleep can
lead to serious illnesses such as depression, heart disease and even cancer.
Let’s work together to reduce light pollution and protect our beautiful starry skies!
