SOCIAL MEDIA EFFECTS ON MENTAL HEALTH IN TEENAGERS
The innovation scene has quickly developed as of late, with web – based media
presently assuming a focal part in the existence of youth. Social media has created
both huge new difficulties and energized open doors.
About the definition of Social Media, according to Merriam – Webster dictionary,
social media is “forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social
networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to
share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)”.
Moreover, anybody with web access can pursue an online media account (Hudson,
2020). They can utilize that record to share anything content they decide to, and the
substance they share arrives at any individual who visits their page or profile. On
the one hand, social media has turned into the technique for publication in the
twenty – first century, allowing us to communicate our beliefs, thoughts and
manners in a new way (Saravanakumar M, SuganthaLakshmi T, 2012). In
Saravanakumar and SuganthaLakshmi’s opinion, this mode of communication has
significantly affected partnership, where they have understood that without a right
arrangement and social media strategy, they get no opportunity to stand out in the
quickly changing advanced opportunity (2012).
And in modern society, teenagers are significantly affected by the development of
social media. Youths as of now growing up around the world are important to an
extraordinary generation. They have grown up in an undeniably society where the
use of computerized screens is increased and unavoidable (Orban A, 2020). Most
teenagers are fully entrenched in a world of smartphones, computers, and social
media by the time they reach adolescence. According to recent nationally
representative figures, 95% of teenagers aged 13-18 have access to a smartphone lOMoAR cPSD| 46560390
and 88% approach a work area or PC at home (Anderson M, Jiang J, 2018).
Therefore, they will be affected in many aspects such as their performance at
school, their behavior… But their mental health will be impacted significantly. The
MentalHealth.gov (2022) stated that emotional, psychological, and social well –
being are all aspects of mental health. It influences individuals’ thought process,
feelings, and actions. It also aids in determining how to handle pressure, connect
with others, and decide. Emotional wellness is significant at all stages of life, from
youth and pre-adulthood through adulthood.
Research via web – based media and young adult emotional wellness has
multiplied as of late, with many examinations investigating whether more
successive utilization of web – based media is related with different psychological
well – being concerns, including sadness (McCrae N, et al., 2017), self –
perception concerns and confused eating (Holland G, Tiggemann M, 2016), and
externalizing issues (Riehm KE, et al., 2019).
On the other hand, the remarkable highlights of the online media climate have
likewise set out new open doors for advancing teenagers’ emotional well – being.
As a general rule, there is a scope of potential advantages related with online media
use, including opportunities for humor and diversion (Anderson M, Jiang J, 2018),
character investigation (Anderson M, Jiang J, 2018), and inventive articulation (Clark JL, et al., 2018). lOMoAR cPSD| 46560390
