I was able to get a variety of new things from the organizational behavioral course by finishing
session 4 and session 5, as well as refresh my memory on topics I previously knew but needed a
reminder about.
I think most of us know what personality is. Before studying this lesson, I thought that personality
depends more on environmental factors, but actually, it is heredity that determines a person's
personality. Moreover, the values and personalities lesson also helps me to know that personality
is almost immutable. The thing which can be changed is character. It usually forms depending on
the environment. For example, I am an introvert, therefore when I meet strangers I do not take the
initiative to talk to them and my appearance is often cold. When you hear this, you will think it is
hard for me to work in the field of F&B. Nevertheless, I have adapted to this work environment
by changing my character such as I will offer friendly and genuine greetings instead of waiting for
them to greet me first. I believe if I do that, my store manager will not happy and maybe she will
fire me. Understanding the definition of personality not also helps me to know myself, but also
allows me to understand others. I think it is very important for me if I am a manager in the future.
As I have to know, to understand in order to manage my employees and balance their personalities
in the same working environment. For instance, a department should not have a lot of extroverts
and there is only one introvert. The introverted person will feel overwhelmed because of
information overload, and they can’t stand people having too much energy. As a result, they will
feel lost and will not like to go to work which leads them to leave their job. About values, this
topic allows me to expand my knowledge a lot. Understanding the definition of values, it helps me
to be a better HR manager in the future. Since values lay the foundation for our understanding of
people’s attitudes and motivation, and they influence our perception. I also know that there are
two types of personal values which are instrumental values and terminal values. Instrumental
values include the goals you exist for, strive for in an organization, factors that influence everyday
behavior, and create a personal brand. The terminal value is the ultimate goal of your life, never
changing and influencing important “trade offs” decisions. Instrumental values are used to serve, -
as tools to achieve the terminal values. Knowing personality and values of the employees brings a
wide variety of benefits to an organization, two of which are person-job fit and person-organization
fit. These advantages allow organizations to reduce the high turnover. When HR managers recruit
and select employees, they will take candidates to do some tests such as the MBTI test, the Big
Five model or they will use the Hexagon test. After the candidates finish this test, HR managers
will know which their person-job fit is and do they fit with our person-organization fit. I think
finding out the person-job fit of our staffs, the manager can manage their staff better. Since they
know this employee is always willing to do anything when their boss asks, or they are ready to
overtime if their manager asks. As their value is instrumental, they always try hard to reach their
goal. And after this goal, they will find another to achieve. Furthermore, by taking tests for
candidates, the manager will know if their values are suitable for the company’s core values. After
that, the manager will decide if this candidate can be their staff. I believe that this is one of the
various ways to reduce high turnover. Andrea Sachs in Devil wears Prada film, for instance, her
values are friends and family. However, the job’s values are the staff have to always be ready to
work, to overtime if needed. Although she has to change her life to adapt to the job, her values are
still family and friends. These things cannot be changed, so finally she still decides to leave her
job. In addition, I have already taken the MBTI test, and my personality type is INFJ-T. This result
helps me to realize that I am an introverted person. Therefore, in the future I would like to work
with both extroverts and introverts because I cannot stand all my colleagues having too much
energy, I will feel exhausted and overloaded with their information. However, I find it is boring
for me if I just work with introverted people. Therefore, I would like to work with both of them.
Besides, I prefer a job which always has challenging tasks every day. I do not like every day I go
to work, I do the same task yesterday. To me, it is such a boring job, I think I will not bond this
job for long. I love challenging. It helps me realize my own shortcomings while I am working.
Therefore, I will improve myself to achieve the company’s target excellently. The challengings
also boost my productivity as it makes me love my work more. About my dream workplace, I think
I would like to work in a friendly and comfortable working environment which encourages me to
be creative. And obviously, my values are the same as Andrea Sachs. Most of my time, I usually
spend with my family and friends, so in the future, I hope I will work in a company whose core
values are suitable for me.
The following chapter is about perception and decision process. This lesson has brought various
practical knowledge and advantages for me if I have the opportunity to become a manager in the
future. Firstly, perception is significantly important because people behave based on their
perception and the perceived world is different from reality. Moreover, I also learned more about
the factors decide the attribution of the causes such as distinctiveness, consensus, and consistency.
However, attribution also sometimes encounters errors. For example, when you go to a restaurant,
the waiter serves you the wrong dish. If it were me, I would think it was the waiter's fault. And I
will start to get annoyed and rate this restaurant 1 star. But the fact that the chef is wrong, they are
the ones who directly make the food and stick the food tag on the dish. The duty of the waiter is
to serve the correct number of tables noted on that tag. Because of the situation, I thought it was
the waiter's fault. Nonetheless, I totally wrong. Now when I go to a restaurant, if the staff serves
me the wrong dish, I will not scold them anymore and ask them to ask the chef again happily.
Secondly, there are people who are successful, they often assume that it is because they are
excellent. However, when they fail, they blame circumstances. I think this is an element I wouldn't
have if I became a manager. If my department succeeds, or I get promoted, I think it's because I
have everyone's support and trust. I think being a good manager is only a small part of my success.
Finally, I think in the future if I become a manager, I will be an introvert manager, as I said above
I am an introvert. In my opinion, a good leader is not someone who directs his subordinates well,
but a good manager is someone who knows how to connect people together and listens to theỉr
opinions. Because each of them has different perceptions and experiences in life. When they
express their opinions, they often rely on their pre-existing perceptions. Good leaders will be the
ones to synthesize those perceptions and come up with a suitable plan for the company's project.
Regarding a time when I could not make a rational decision due to my overconfidence bias and
availability bias. When I was in 12th grade, I decided not to take extra classes. Because I went to
school for 11 years, I was self-taught and all achieved good results. When I was in 12th grade, I
had to take the university entrance exam so I only took extra math classes. About other subjects, I
thought I would learn by myself as I did in previous years. However, I had a hard time studying
physics well. Every time I took a test with a low score, I often blamed myself for not doing well.
I started to focus on studying physics. But I still could not find the right learning method for myself.
Maybe it was because I was too consistent with my old plan of self-study and I was too confident
in myself, not even looking for help from people around me. Thanks to this lesson, I know that
time was an intuitive decision making. In the future, I will improve myself by taking steps to
analyze before making a decision, especially at work. I believe this way will help me be more
productive. In addition, I also learn more in this lesson is creativity. Creativity is good. But if we
are only creative, it is not enough to reach a goal. For example, you want to start up this item
because the demand for this item around you is high. However, it is not certain that other people's
demands are high. That's why you need to do data-driven analytics, and then start creating what
you want.
To summarize, I really enjoyed studying this subject. Every chapter always has brought me expert
knowledge, especially the major in human resource management I am studying. This knowledge
helped me understand more about the specialized knowledge of human behavior. That helps me
equip more skills for the future to be an excellent human resource manager.
