1.2 The importance of English in modern life
Nowadays, English is the most popular language in the
world. It is the language that everyone needs to learn apart from
our mother tongue language, in the other hand, just like a bridge
that can get people from many countries closer. It is vital to have
good English because when you know how to use English 2 lOMoAR cPSD| 35883770
wisely, you can connect to other people all over the world more
easily and will be able to deal with many problems in your life.
Moreover, as there are more and more foreign companies,
English is also being used as a condition in order to decide if a
person can be hired or not, so having a good English skill means
that a higher chance to have better work.
Chapter II. ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDY AT THU DAU MOT UNIVERSITY 2.1 History of English.
1At the beginning, English was the language of England for
a comparatively short period in the world’s history. Since its
introduction into the island about the middle of the fifth century
it has had a career extending through only 1,500 years. 2There
are four stages of the creation of English: Old English, The
Middle English, The Early Modern English, and The Modern
English. Beginning in 550 Before Century Time, there had been
many changes of English during this time, including one of the
most important innovation of the language revolution, the
“Great Vowel Shift”, which made the vowels were shorter to
pronoun and words were easier to speak, but the vocabulary was
not as wide as the present English. In the XVI century, English
language got a big step on developing itself since a big amount
of people who spoke English had communicated with many
traits all over the world, which is the key factor that leads to the

“the Great Vowel Shift”, the grammar and vocabulary of English
was more precisely then and the pronunciation had a big
difference with the Old English and the Middle English.
Nowadays, English is the most popular language in the world. 2.2 Academic Programs
Studying faculty of English language in Thu Dau Mot
University, students will have the opportunity to study English
in advance, which helps the student to understand the language
and have a certain level of mastering it. During the progress,
students will be guided by lecturers so that they can discover the
variety of English by themselves, including the four basic skills
such as listening, reading, speaking and writing and other vital
skills that are important when studying the major of English in
order to use it in real-life work and situations. The English
language program is aimed at developing office workers with all
the language requirements, in line with the trend of international
integration. Beside learning English, students can also absorb
experiences of learning the knowledge of history, culture and
financial activities of other countries that also use English as
their main or second language.
2.3. Teaching and learning activities
When learning in Thu Dau Mot university, students can
interact with lecturers in many subjects in order to get a good
mark and earn more knowledge during the courses. When
discovering a new thing in a class, lecturers will first explain the
basics for the student, then they will give students examples of
the problem in order to help students to get used to the new
knowledge. Furthermore, lecturers give more advanced 4 lOMoAR cPSD| 35883770
exercises for the students in order to make them understand it
more and be able to use it more fluently. Speaking of students,
they have to sum up the main ideas and knowledge that the
lecturers have expressed during the class. Self-studying is recommended for the students. 2.4. Job opportunities
There are many opportunities for students who study this
major, but mainly two ways of finding jobs, which are English
pedagogy and English business. Besides basic skills that TDM
supports for students, there will be more practical skills classes
and professional courses that students can enroll in order to
prepare more carefully for their future careers. Nowadays,
students who major in English learning can have chances to
work in international schools or foreign companies as a
translator or a negotiator, which gives them a better income.
Besides that, students can learn other professional skills in other
fields such as technology or computer science. 2.5 Prospective goals
In my perspective, students who enroll in English study
have so many reasons, mainly because they are interested in
English and want to go further with it in their future careers.
Some of them said that they want to discover deeper into the
English language, in history or cultural events of other countries
for instance, or just as easily as they want to travel around the
world themselves. English is used wisely around the world, so
preparing a variety of English is necessary. 5 lOMoAR cPSD| 35883770
Chapter III. LANGUAGE SKILLS AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THESE SKILLS
3.1 Description of the four skills -Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing
When learning English, try to master the four most
important skills in English: Listening, Speaking, Reading and
Writing. If you are new to English, then listening will be your
first step. Try to listen to easy songs to get used to the
pronunciation of the words and then move on listening to the
radio or news on TV. Speaking is also related to listening, so if
you can hear the word, your brain will start to copy it and how
the word is said. Writing and Reading is quite difficult
because you need to have a variety of words and grammar
structures, so starting with simple steps such as writing a new
word and then you say it loudly so that you can remember it
longer, when you learn a new grammar structure, try to do as
many exercises as you can so that you can remember clearly.
3.2 Own experiences in learning these skills
With me, learning these basic skills took me a lot of time,
but there were a lot of good memories. To me, English is like
a way for me to make new friends and connect with new
people, who are also interested in English. If I can give out the
hard level of the four skills, speaking will be the hardest.
Because not only do you have to learn new words and
grammar points, but you also have to combine them. 6 lOMoAR cPSD| 35883770
Nevertheless, you have to make sure that others know what
you are saying, so you have to train to get it fluently and precisely.
Chapter IV. YOUR PLAN FOR THE COURSE.
In order to learn English more effectively, during my time
learning English in the university, I need to try my best to do
many activities that are English-related. First, I will try to enroll
in as many English clubs and other English events as I can so
that i can improve my English skills and get myself an English
mentor, which is helpful for me in order to master the language.
Then, I think that I will need to get an international qualification
like IELTS or TOEIC. After that, I can try to apply in
international companies as an apprentice so that I can widen my
knowledge and earn more experience for my future career. I can
also get a presentation letter from the company’s owner. Last but
not least, I can take part in social classes or practical skills
courses such as time management, team-working or practical
thinking. Of course, it will be challenging, but I will manage to
complete it by the time I graduate. Chapter V. CONCLUSION
In the whole, learning the Faculty of English language in
Thu Dau Mot university is going to be one of the most
interesting thing to do in my life. I guess this will be a lot of
opportunities for me to acquire many new things that are new to
me. Choosing this university is the right choice for me and hope
that I can do my best in here. 7
