First, I will talk about the history of the cathedral. This sense of sacred theory was buiilt
in 1886, not by the French people, but by Vietnamese people, however, the French supported
that. To talk about it, we need to talk about some related history, about the history of
Catholocism in Viet Nam. In the 16th century, there were some first commisionaries coming to
Viet Nam. At first, our kings and monarchy ( Quân vương), we’re okay with the new religion
because they didn’t see any threat from that religion but after a while, they found that if a
person followed that religion, he would wash him a new God, a God in heaven. Before, they
had been unconditionally loyal to King only, there had been only one God who was a king. But
after that, there was a new God who was Jesus. And o, King fell in love with a new God by the
religion. Àn that’s when King and the Lord jusst expelled the missionaries. After a while, ourr
Kings, our feudalism system chased away the missionaries, but they were still there. They
couldn’t chase all the missionaries away.
In answer to that, under Nguyen Dynasty, we know that the fouder of Nguyen was
Nguyễn Ánh. During the process of fighting against Tây Sơn, the previous dynasty, Nguyen Anh
asked for help from the French government. In reality, the French government didn’t support
Nguyen Anh. At first, they wanted to support Nguyen Anh but then there was some
disagreement so they didn’t support Nguyen Anh anymore. However, Nguyen Anh had some
good friends who were French people. That man was rich and he used his own money and he
also raised funds for Nguyen Anh. Thanks to that, Nguyen Anh got a lot of money. With the
death of Nguyen Hue, Nguyen Hue died very soon, so that Nguyen Anh could defeat Tay Sơn
and founded Nguyen Dynasty. And because Nguyen Anh received some help from the French
people, he felt indebted to the French people. He had to allow the Frech to stay in Viet Nam to
do business, evangelize, popularize Catholicism. He didn’t like it but he still hadn to do.
And after Nguyen Anh, the second king was Minh Mac, Nguyen Anh chose Minh Mac.
Minh Mang was the third prince of Nguyen Anh. Ming Mang had some xenophobic atÝtude. If
Nguyen Anh hated Westerner one, Ming Mang would hate Westerner too. Anh from Minh
Mang, they started suppresing Catholicism and missionary, and they killed a lot of missionary
and Catholicism until after Minh Mang was killed, Tự Đức was a king but the suppression
getÝng more and more serious. That was also an excuse for the French to enter Viet Nam.
We have learned about the first industrial revolution. They didn’t have any reason to
enter Viet Nam. Viet Nam was an independent country, but later, they tried to find a reason
and we didn’t give the French a good reason or execuse to enter Viet Nam. They said they came
to Viet Nam to serve Catholicism and missionaries to protect the Frech nationals in Viet Nam.
That was one of the reasons why they came to Viet Nam, and very quickly, they invaded Viet
Nam at Sơn Trà Penisula. The they found that they couldn’t go further. At first, they wanted to
attack Da Nang, and then, directly, they entered Hue to defeat , to arrest and to kill Nguyen lOMoAR cPSD| 48632119
King so that they could control the whole country. But when they came there, they found that
Nguyen’s army was quite powerful. They couldn’t go further outside of Da Nang and after a
short time, in 2 weeks, they move to Sai Gon where was far away from hue, and they occupied
Sai Gon very quickly. And after that, Sai Gon was the whole south of Viet Nam. Until 1867, they
colonized the whole south of Viet Nam and named it Cauchin China, meaning near China. That was the first colony in 1867.
About 17 years later, they colonized the North which is the center of Viet nam. It means
the whole country was under the colonization of the French and from that time, they started
the exploitation over Viet Nam and Vietnamese people. And of course, a lot of Vietnamese
people fought against the French and the French wanted to use Catholicism as a tool for rulling
too. They had a lot of rulling tools: divide and rule, use a legal system poisons our people,
stupify our people and in addition they use relision. I don’t say religion is bad, Catholicism is
bad, but that’s how they use it, Catholicism to rule Vietnamese people, to support thẻir rulling.
So why? Because the French, most of the French follow Catholicism. And they believe that if a
person who followed Catholicism, that person would be closer to the French and he would not
fight against th French. So that the French encourage the speading of the religion Catholicism in
Viet Nam and the construction of Catholic churches over the countries. This one was among the
first Catholic church built in Viet Nam and in Ha Noi. It was the biggest one and until now, this
cathedral is still the headquater of Catholicism in Ha Noi and that’s why it’s quite crowded all
the time and lots of Vietnamese and foreigners come here to do conduct some mass.
So that is the history of this one, now the architecture. It is neo gothic, involved from
the 11th century already but in around 17th , 18th, 19th century, there were a neo Gothic. And
your see a lot of poeted arches. That’s some typical fissủe of this neo-Gothic architecture. After
more than 100 years, it still stays well there, and esp when you get into, you see, kind of
gorgeous. I have to say that it’s gorgeous, so beautiful inside, sophiscated decoration, motif.
And people say that this one is a model of the church in Paris, a copy of apperance, they
wanted to demonstrate that. That’s Notre Dame de Paris. - Religion:
Talking about the religion, I respect all the religion and I’m neutral towards religion, a theist.
We have 3 major branches in the classification of the religion. The first one, Hinduism have
existed for 4000 years. The second one is Buddhism have existed for 2500 years. An in
Buddhism, we classify it into 2 types which are Mahayana which is great vehicle and Hinayana
which is small vehicle. The third one is theGreat Creator which means every thing in the
universe is created by the Great Creator. An we classify this one into Jewish days which existed
4000 years ago, Christianity and Jslam and Muslim wih the leader is Mohammed. Eighty
percent of Indians follow Hinduism. Buddhism also evolved from India. But now, it’s not
popular in India for so many reasons. The first reason is that, before Buddhism evolved in India,
there had been Hinduism existing for more than thousand years. And ít’s not easy that people lOMoAR cPSD| 48632119
were willing to convert from their old religion to a new religion. So they still followed their old
religion. The second reason is about the power conflict or interest conflict. The rulling class
were following Hinduism and in that religion, they are right. They have some privilidges. But if
they converted religion to Buddhism, then they would lose those privilidges. And about
Christianity, which existed 20000 years ago. To talk about it, I want to talk about “Industrial
Revolution”. But before that, there was “Scientific Revolution” and in the “Scientific
Revolution”, people have some scientific knowledge so they reduced their belief in religion.
Before that, the church was the center. Everything, missionary or priest of the church said it
was the truth. But after that, some scientist such as Galile had sme scientific knowledge. They
transformed the belief from, for example, from the theory that the earth was the center, they
moved to the thẻory that the sun was the center of the earth. Martin Luther, a priest, believed
that Mary was a virgin, but she still got pregnant. She jusst rêcived some magic, some mission
from the God. She didn’t do anything . But Mr Martin Luther believed that she must have done
st with some man to pregnant. In Christianity, it is classified into 3 group which are Catholicism, Eastern
Orthodoxism and Alicanism Protestantism. In Catholicism, prists are not alowed to marry, have kids but pastor can.
