Perception is a major influence on individual behavior. It is the process through which
people receive and interpret information from the environment. It affects the impressions we
form about ourselves, other people, and daily life experiences. And there are various factors
that can affect perception such as attribution, personality, attitude, stress. In this essay, I will
address and analyze factors that affect personal perception.
First of all, one of the factors that affect personal perception is attribution. Attribution is the
process of developing explanations for events. To be more detailed, the attribution may be
influenced by fundamental attribution error, self-serving bias, stereotype, halo effect,
selective perception, projection. Fundamental attribution error occurs when someone’s
performance problems are blamed more on internal failures of the individual than external
factors relating to the environment. For example, my boss is a kind of perfectionist and he
always wants everythings to be perfect to provide high quality products and service for
customers. But he may forget to look back at the shortage of facilities and employees. So
everytime something happens he will blame all responsibilities for the lack of concentration
or ability of employees. Instead of blaming the entire staff, he may control his emotions and
look over all processes to find out the errors in the process first such as the lack of
employees. And can discuss with employees to determine the better solution to limit or avoid
the mistake for customers. Moreover, the halo effect which occurs when one attribute is used
to develop an overall impression of a person's attitude is one of factors that may affect
personal perception. With the “halo” first impression may trigger the positive perception and
vice versa. It is obvious that when we see a person with gorgeous appearance for the first
time, we definitely will have a positive thought about this person. It can be denied that a
person with “halo” appearance will have more chances compared to a person with normal
appearance. And also we will have more expectations of a person with “halo” appearance. As
a result, the halo effect will error on the evaluation of performance of people. Personally, I
have several incorrect evaluations of some people that I meet for the first time due to the halo
effect. To restrict the inappropriate evaluation by perception due to the error of aspect of

attribution, we can learn how to receive, deduce, analyze an event or a person objectively and

Moreover, personality is also a factor that may influence individual perception. personality
in management to describe the profile of enduring characteristics that makes each of us
unique. There are numerous ways to find out personality and the MBTI test is one of the most
popular. The Myers-Briggs Type (MBTI): Indicator is another popular approach to
personality assessment. It “types” personalities based on a questionnaire that probes into how
people act or feel in various situations. Personally, I have two results in the MBTI test which
is INTP and INFP so sometimes I may act like a thinker with things that require critical or
logical thinking. However I may determine something as the empath with emotional
information tends to prioritize feeling. And stress is an aspect that can directly affect personal
behavior or perception. Stress is a state of tension caused by extraordinary demands,
constraints, or opportunities. There are two types of stress which are constructive stress and
destructive stress. Constructive stress acts in a positive way to increase effort, stimulate
creativity, and encourage diligence in one’s work. Destructive stress occurs when intense or
long- term stress overloads and breaks down a person’s physical and mental systems.
