1 Introduction
At a conference to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist
Youth League of China, Xi said, ‘Young people are the most deserving of love and care
and the most deserving of expectations for the Party and the country
[1]
. This shows the
importance of college students to develop good living habits. According to the 53rd
Statistical Report on the Development of the Internet in China, as of December 2023,
the number of Internet users in China has reached 1.092 billion, and each person spends
more than 29.1 hours online every week
[2]
. Among them, college students are the main
force of young users of social media. Through the summary of the research status at
home and abroad, it is concluded that the current research on the impact of social media
on college students' lifestyle is not deep enough. Therefore, through research methods
such as questionnaire survey and interview, this paper aims to deeply explore the dual
impact of social media on college students' lifestyle, and put forward effective coping
strategies for negative impact, so as to provide theoretical and practical guidance for
college students' healthy growth and social media management.

2 Research Background and Problems
2.1 Research Background and Significance
With the popularization and development of social media, college students have in-
creasingly frequent activities on social media. As one of the major audiences in the
Internet age, they have unique characteristics in the frequency and way of using social
media. They widely use social media platforms, such as Weibo and wechat, in their
daily lives to obtain information, communicate with others, share experiences and
express emotions
[5]
. However, with this comes the dual impact of social media on
college students' lifestyles.
The function of social media is expanding day by day, it is no longer just a platform
for social chat, it also has the function of shopping consumption, reading and learning.
College students are the main force of young people who use social media, and they
have a strong connection with social media in their daily study, work, leisure and
entertainment. The impact of social media on the lifestyle of college students needs
in-depth research and rational understanding. Therefore, it is of great theoretical and
practical significance to systematically study the impact of social media on college
students' lifestyle.
At the same time, with the continuous development of information technology, new
functions and applications of social media platforms continue to emerge, which also
brings new challenges and opportunities to the study of college students' lifestyle.
Therefore, an in-depth discussion on the impact of social media on the lifestyle of
college students is not only helpful to deepen the understanding of the characteristics of
college students in the Internet era, but also helpful to provide good guidance for the
use of social media for college students, so as to better adapt to the social life in the
information age.
2.2 Research Objectives and Problems
The purpose of this study is to deeply explore the dual impact of social media on col-
lege students' lifestyle, and to propose effective coping strategies for the negative
impact. Specifically, only the following questions are answered.
Is there a correlation between college students' free time and social media usage?
What is the impact of social media use on college students' lifestyles? What are the
positive and negative effects? What factors contribute to the negative impact? Based on
understanding the impact of college students' use of social media on their lifestyle, how
to provide effective intervention measures for college students, relevant universities
and social media organizations to help college students develop a good lifestyle.

3 An Overview of Social Media and College Students'
Lifestyles
3.1 The Definition of Social Media
Social media refers to the digital social space built by information technology and
Internet platform, which is convenient for users to exchange and share information. It
includes but is not limited to various social network applications such as wechat, Weibo
and Douyin, as well as platforms for information dissemination and social interaction
based on multimedia forms such as text, pictures and videos. Social media transfer
information, opinions and emotions among users, promote the establishment and
maintenance of interpersonal relationships, and share user-generated content, provid-
ing users with a convenient channel for communication and information acquisition.
Under the framework of social media, users can display and share personalized in-
formation by establishing personal profiles, adding friends, following interested topics
and other functions, so as to achieve the diversity of self-expression and social inter-
action. The concept of social media has gradually evolved into a synonym for a digital
social lifestyle, becoming an important part of People's Daily lives and social interac-
tions.
3.2 The Definition of College Students' Lifestyle
College students' lifestyle refers to a series of stable and regular living habits and
behavior patterns formed by college students in their daily life, including the perfor-
mance of learning, social interaction, entertainment, life and rest. The formation of
college students' life style is influenced by many factors, such as family background,
school environment, social culture and so on. Specifically, the definition of college
students' lifestyle includes but is not limited to the following aspects:
First of all, the life style of college students includes study habits and academic
pursuits. College students' learning attitude, learning methods, academic goals and
ways of acquiring and applying knowledge all form part of their learning habits and
academic pursuits.
Secondly, college students' lifestyle also involves social behavior and interpersonal
relationship. College students' social circle, making friends habits and participation in
social activities on and off campus all form part of their social behavior and interper-
sonal relationship.
In addition, the life style of college students also includes the attention to health and
the arrangement of life and rest. College students' exercise habits, sleep time and other
factors form part of their health concerns and life schedule.
In general, the life style of college students is a complex concept involving many
aspects, which comprehensively reflects the behavior habits and value orientation of
college students in learning, social interaction, rest and rest, and is a concentrated
reflection of their individual behaviors. The in-depth definition and analysis of college
students' lifestyle can help us better understand the impact of social media on college

students' lifestyle, and provide a theoretical basis for effectively guiding college stu-
dents to rationally use social media.
4 Research Design and Method
This study used a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to gain insight
into the impact of social media on college students' lifestyles. First, we conducted a
series of questionnaires covering the frequency, time allocation, preference and other
aspects of college students' social media use. Through the statistical analysis of the
questionnaire data, we obtained the prevalence of social media in the life of college
students and the degree of impact on life style. Secondly, we adopted the method of
focus interviews to get an in-depth understanding of individual college students' habits,
views and opinions on social media. These interviews provide us with a wealth of case
data, enabling us to have a more three-dimensional understanding of the specific impact
of social media on college students' lifestyle and the reasons. Finally, we observed
college students' social media use behavior to further verify the credibility and validity
of the questionnaire and interview data.
Through the research methods of questionnaire survey, focus interview and behavior
observation, we can comprehensively understand the impact of social media on college
students' lifestyle. This research method is characterized by the combination of quali-
tative and quantitative data, which can analyze the problem more comprehensively and
deeply, and reduce the single limitation that may exist in different research methods to
a certain extent. At the same time, through the cross-validation of various research
methods, we improve the reliability and persuasiveness of the research results, making
them more in line with academic standards and practical application needs.
In its implementation, this study uses a combination of qualitative and quantitative
methods to gain insight into the impact of social media on college students' lifestyles.
Relevant data were collected through questionnaire survey and interview. The ques-
tionnaire was released through a combination of online and offline methods, and col-
lege students from different universities randomly selected to fill in the questionnaire
and interview to ensure the representativeness and diversity of the sample. The data
measurement includes the frequency, time allocation, preference, purpose and other
aspects of college students' social media use.
Using the Spss2.0 data analysis tool, through the statistical analysis of the ques-
tionnaire data, we obtained the extent of the influence of the prevalence of social media
in the life of college students on the lifestyle. Through the content analysis of a large
number of literatures and the results of research data analysis, the conclusion is drawn
that social media does have an impact on college students' lifestyle, and there are some
positive and negative effects on social interaction, study, exercise and sleep.

their payment and shopping convenient, 47.77% of college students will often save
money in wechat, 28.34%, 14.98%, 8.91% of college students will occasionally save
money in wechat, how much money is saved in wechat, will not save money in wechat.
College students make purchases after seeing the marketing on social media, among
which 44.93% of college students will buy beauty and fashion products, 19.84% will
buy fitness equipment products, and 34.01% will buy school supplies such as school
records.
Fifth, about the impact of social media on college students' sleep. According to the
data, 56.68% of college students need more than 30 minutes to fall asleep after going to
bed, and 18.22% of college students sleep for more than 2 hours at night. 10.12% of
college students sleep 5-6 hours a day, 60.73% of college students sleep 7-8 hours a
day, 27.13% of college students sleep 9-10 hours a day, the data shows that most

resources is more convenient and rich, and 38.46% of college students think that using
wechat to study will become fragmented. In addition, more than 53% of students be-
lieve that learning in Douyin is the use of fragmented time, and 67.21% of college
students learn non-professional knowledge. 20.24 percent of college students believe
that wechat will make people indulge in entertainment and reduce their study time.
The Impact of Social Media on College Students’ Lifestyles 507
Seventh, about the impact of social media on college students' exercise habits.
Through data analysis, it is found that 69.23% of college students occasionally do not
even care about the ranking of wechat sports mini programs. Only 28.34% of college
students will pay attention to the hot searches about sports on Weibo. In addition, 72.06
percent of college students said they would not do physical exercise through wechat.
And 63.16% of college students said that the main reason for watching Douyin live
fitness is to kill time for entertainment.
6 The Impact of Social Media on College Students'
Lifestyles
6.1 Positive Influence
First, it enriches the daily life of college students. College students can get more in-
formation and content through social media platforms, which enriches their daily life.
At the same time, social media provides a platform for college students to communicate
and interact. The social life of college students is enriched by Posting updates and
commenting on replies. Through social media, college students can easily get a variety
of new and interesting things, adding to the fun of life, regulating the study pressure,
and improving the quality of life.
Second, it expands the living space of college students. Through social media, col-
lege students can easily access a variety of social information, learn more interesting
activities and events, and expand their social circle. Through social media platforms,
college students can also find cross-school friends with the same hobbies, which
broadens their interpersonal circle and increases communication opportunities. In
addition, social media also provides a variety of life skills and experience sharing
opportunities to help college students more efficiently arrange their lives, all of which
makes social media for college students to create a broader living space.
Third, it enhances college students' sense of self-identity. The popularity of social
media provides a platform for college students to show themselves and express their
personalities. By Posting photos, texts, videos and other content on social media,
college students can show their interests, hobbies, life status and spiritual outlook, so as
to gain recognition and support from others. This kind of behavior of showing oneself
and expressing individuality helps college students to establish self-confidence and
pride, thus enhancing their sense of self-identity.
Fourth, it enhances the life efficiency of college students. The convenience and in-
teractivity of social media enables college students to complete various tasks more
efficiently, including learning, socializing and entertainment. With the help of social
media, college students can access information, solve problems and manage their time
faster, thus improving their life efficiency. At the same time, social media also provides
many conveniences for college students, such as online shopping, online learning and
remote social networking functions, which further improves the efficiency of life.
508 S. Wu et al.
6.2 Negative Influence
First, it makes college students have difficulty in time management and disorder of
work and rest. College students spend too much time on entertainment when using
social media, which leads to difficulties in time management, work and rest disorders
and other problems. College students use social media for entertainment for at least 3
hours a day, which leads to over-entertainment, which crowds out their other activities,
such as break time, study time, etc. College students turn on social media before going
to bed to watch short videos, novels, etc. This causes them to take longer to fall asleep,
reducing the quality of their sleep and preventing them from developing good sleep
habits.
Second, it leads to the fragmentation of college students' learning knowledge. The
forms of representation of knowledge in social media have become diverse, and at the
same time, knowledge has become fragmented, easy to understand but not systematic.
Some social software has time and word limit, they want to meet the needs of quick
reading and browsing, but the content provided is shallow and wide, big and empty
[4]
.
College students' reliance on social media for learning will not only lead to the frag-
mentation of learning knowledge, but also lead to the risk of not being able to identify
the authenticity of non-professional knowledge.
Third, it is not conducive to college students to develop good exercise habits. Col-
lege students seldom pay attention to sports information when using social media,
which is not conducive to the development of their healthy sports habits. There are also
sports sections in social media, but these are often overshadowed by entertainment.
College students tend to pay more attention to entertainment information when using
social media, so they can get less useful sports information from social media than
other types of information.
7 Reasons for the Negative Impact of Social Media on
College Students' Lifestyles
First, social media is flooded with entertainment and leisure content
[3]
. College stu-
dents are excessively addicted to social media, which expands the time for entertain-
ment, thus crowding out their rest time, causing problems such as sleep difficulties,
resulting in disorder of work and rest and difficulty in time management, which brings
adverse effects on their physical and mental health.
Secondly, social media also has the problem of information fragmentation and dif-
ficult to distinguish between true and false information. Due to the limitation of the
duration of short videos on social media and the prevalence of marketing posts on
social media, college students will have fragmented learning knowledge and reading
when they study or obtain information on social media, and it is difficult to distinguish
the authenticity of marketing posts and obtained information. This has caused serious
troubles to college students' life and study.
Finally, the information about sports on social media is not popular, so the content
about sports and human health habits is often ignored by college students. College
The Impact of Social Media on College Students’ Lifestyles 509
students rarely pay attention to sports information on social media, and even if they do,
most of the reasons are for recreation, rather than for fitness or to develop good exercise
habits
[6]
.
8 Countermeasures of College Students' Rational Use of
Social Media Under Social Media Environment
8.1 Improve College Students' Own Media Literacy
Media literacy includes not only the ability to screen and distinguish social media
content, but also the skills to use social media for information dissemination and ex-
pression. They should master the basic norms and skills of using social media, such as
how to identify the authenticity of information and how to correctly disseminate in-
formation, so as to use social media more rationally. In addition, college students
should also take the initiative to learn relevant laws and regulations, understand the
relevant regulations and legal responsibilities of social media use, and make legal and
compliant use of social media
[7-10]
.
8.2 Cultivate College Students' Awareness of Proper Use of Social
Media
In order to cultivate college students' awareness of proper use of social media, a series
of targeted measures need to be taken. First of all, schools and families should
strengthen media literacy education for college students to improve their cognitive
level and rational use of social media. Secondly, the society should encourage the
establishment of a guidance mechanism for the use of social media to help college
students use social media more rationally by providing relevant guidelines and sug-
gestions
[8-10]
. At the same time, relevant departments also need to formulate and im-
prove the corresponding laws and regulations, regulate the management and use of
social media platforms, and protect the legitimate rights and interests of college stu-
dents on social media platforms from the legal level.
8.3 Improve the Social Media Management Mechanism
In practice, we can establish a sound social media management mechanism, including
but not limited to the following aspects:
First, establish a sound account management system. Schools can formulate relevant
regulations requiring students to provide student certificates when registering social
media accounts, and bind them with school status information to ensure the authenticity
and legitimacy of accounts. At the same time, the management of student accounts will
be strengthened, requiring students to abide by relevant regulations when using social
media, and not to spread false information or commit illegal acts.
Second, strengthen education and guidance. Schools can carry out relevant lectures,
thematic class meetings and other forms to popularize the correct use of social media to
510 S. Wu et al.
students, and educate students to form healthy online behavior habits and values. At the
same time, strengthen the attention and guidance of students' mental and physical
health, guide them to correctly deal with the negative impact of social media, and avoid
psychological and behavioral problems caused by improper use of social media.
9 Conclusion
According to the research results, this paper makes a comprehensive analysis and
summary of the impact of social media on college students' lifestyle. By comparing the
positive and negative effects of social media, the paper reveals the role of social media
in enriching college students' life content, expanding social space, enhancing
self-identity and improving life efficiency. At the same time, this paper also deeply
discusses the reasons for the negative impact of social media on college students'
lifestyle, and puts forward effective countermeasures, including improving college
students' media literacy, cultivating their awareness of proper use of social media,
improving social media management mechanism and establishing sound laws and
regulations.
When discussing the impact of social media on college students' lifestyle, this paper
has analyzed the dual impact of social media on college students' lifestyle in detail,
including positive impact and negative impact, and put forward corresponding coping
strategies. However, in the process of writing, there may be the following shortcom-
ings: First, in terms of literature citations, although the impact of social media and
college students' lifestyle has been fully discussed, the depth of literature review may
not be comprehensive enough in terms of citing related research. It does not include
some of the latest views and data from relevant research on the impact of social media
on college students' lifestyles. Second, this paper only selects wechat, Weibo and
Douyin, three social media commonly used by college students, and does not cover all
social media, so it has certain limitations. Therefore, when further improving the paper,
it is necessary to further search and cite relevant literature to better support the views of
the paper. At the same time, in the summary and conclusion, the shortcomings of the
current research field and the prospect of future research directions can also be added to
increase the academic quality and practicability of the paper.
All in all, although this study has certain limitations and deficiencies, it also provides
guidance for college students to make reasonable use of social media and provides
reference for the formulation and implementation of relevant policies, which has cer-
tain practical value and guiding significance.

Research Background and Problems
2.1 Research Background and Significance
With the popularization and development of social media, college students have in-
creasingly frequent activities on social media. As one of the major audiences in the
Internet age, they have unique characteristics in the frequency and way of using social
media. They widely use social media platforms, such as Weibo and wechat, in their
daily lives to obtain information, communicate with others, share experiences and
express emotions [5]. However, with this comes the dual impact of social media on college students' lifestyles.
Therefore, it is of great theoretical and
practical significance to systematically study the impact of social media on college students' lifestyle.
At the same time, with the continuous development of information technology, new
functions and applications of social media platforms continue to emerge, which also
brings new challenges and opportunities to the study of college students' lifestyle.
Therefore, an in-depth discussion on the impact of social media on the lifestyle of
college students is not only helpful to deepen the understanding of the characteristics of
college students in the Internet era, but also helpful to provide good guidance for the
use of social media for college students, so as to better adapt to the social life in the information age.

An Overview of Social Media and College Students' Lifestyles
3.1 The Definition of Social Media
Social media refers to the digital social space built by information technology and
Internet platform, which is convenient for users to exchange and share information. It
includes but is not limited to various social network applications such as wechat, Weibo
and Douyin, as well as platforms for information dissemination and social interaction
based on multimedia forms such as text, pictures and videos. Social media transfer
information, opinions and emotions among users, promote the establishment and
maintenance of interpersonal relationships, and share user-generated content, provid-
ing users with a convenient channel for communication and information acquisition.
Under the framework of social media, users can display and share personalized in-
formation by establishing personal profiles, adding friends, following interested topics
and other functions, so as to achieve the diversity of self-expression and social inter-
action. The concept of social media has gradually evolved into a synonym for a digital
social lifestyle, becoming an important part of People's Daily lives and social interac- tions.
First of all, the life style of college students includes study habits and academic
pursuits. College students' learning attitude, learning methods, academic goals and
ways of acquiring and applying knowledge all form part of their learning habits and academic pursuits.
Secondly, college students' lifestyle also involves social behavior and interpersonal
relationship. College students' social circle, making friends habits and participation in
social activities on and off campus all form part of their social behavior and interper- sonal relationship.
The in-depth definition and analysis of college
students' lifestyle can help us better understand the impact of social media on college 506 S. Wu et al.
students' lifestyle, and provide a theoretical basis for effectively guiding college stu-
dents to rationally use social media. 4
Research Design and Method
The Impact of Social Media on College Students’ Lifestyles 507 5 Results and Discussion

The Impact of Social Media on College Students' Lifestyles 6.1 Positive Influence
The Impact of Social Media on College Students’ Lifestyles 509 6.2 Negative Influence
This causes them to take longer to fall asleep,
reducing the quality of their sleep and preventing them from developing good sleep habits.
Second, it leads to the fragmentation of college students' learning knowledge. The
forms of representation of knowledge in social media have become diverse, and at the
same time, knowledge has become fragmented, easy to understand but not systematic.
Some social software has time and word limit, they want to meet the needs of quick
reading and browsing, but the content provided is shallow and wide, big and empty [4].
College students tend to pay more attention to entertainment information when using
social media, so they can get less useful sports information from social media than other types of information. 7
Reasons for the Negative Impact of Social Media on
College Students' Lifestyles
First, social media is flooded with entertainment and leisure content [3].
College 510 S. Wu et al.
students rarely pay attention to sports information on social media, and even if they do,
most of the reasons are for recreation, rather than for fitness or to develop good exercise habits[6]. 8
Countermeasures of College Students' Rational Use of
Social Media Under Social Media Environment
8.1 Improve College Students' Own Media Literacy
Media literacy includes not only the ability to screen and distinguish social media
content, but also the skills to use social media for information dissemination and ex-
pression. They should master the basic norms and skills of using social media, such as
how to identify the authenticity of information and how to correctly disseminate in-
formation, so as to use social media more rationally. In addition, college students
should also take the initiative to learn relevant laws and regulations, understand the
relevant regulations and legal responsibilities of social media use, and make legal and
compliant use of social media[7-10].
8.2 Cultivate College Students' Awareness of Proper Use of Social Media
In order to cultivate college students' awareness of proper use of social media, a series
of targeted measures need to be taken. First of all, schools and families should
strengthen media literacy education for college students to improve their cognitive
level and rational use of social media. Secondly, the society should encourage the
establishment of a guidance mechanism for the use of social media to help college
students use social media more rationally by providing relevant guidelines and sug-
gestions[8-10].
Schools can carry out relevant lectures,
thematic class meetings and other forms to popularize the correct use of social media to

students, and educate students to form healthy online behavior habits and values. At the
same time, strengthen the attention and guidance of students' mental and physical
health, guide them to correctly deal with the negative impact of social media, and avoid
psychological and behavioral problems caused by improper use of social media.
At the same time, this paper also deeply
discusses the reasons for the negative impact of social media on college students'
lifestyle, and puts forward effective countermeasures, including improving college
students' media literacy, cultivating their awareness of proper use of social media,
improving social media management mechanism and establishing sound laws and regulations.
Reference
