Work experience internship is an important chance for graduates to exposure and
understand more about the job they will have after graduation. In this internship, I chose
British International Academy Joint Stock Company (BCU) as my practical training.
Since my major at school is Interpreting and Translation, I applied for the Translator position for this time.
1.2 The internship purposes
Work experience internship is a must for all students in Hoa Sen University to complete
their study path. An internship is a period of time in which a person studies the field of
work that interests them, develops skills and knowledge to apply in the future, and gains
opportunities to apply those skills. The past 7 weeks were not long but still enough for
me to have a real opening to my future. I can gain a great deal of experience in an
educational environment, develop soft skills and professional knowledge through this internship.
1.3 The objective of internship
In addition to the above-mentioned purposes, I have established personal goals for myself: ● Improve translate skills
● Understand the working environment ● Improve soft skills
● Get better in communication 5

Birmingham City University (BCU) started in 1843 with the name The City of
Birmingham Polytechnic. It changed to Birmingham Polytechnic in 1971. Until 1992, the
University changed its name to Birmingham City and kept the name till now. BCU has a history
of nearly 200 years. The school offers courses from Bachelor to Doctorate with many
different majors such as Business, Finance, Computer Science, Computer Networking,
Education, Health, Arts, Law …
Birmingham City University is a major public university in the UK that trains graduates
with the skills and experiences to prepare them for their career. The school has produced
more than 25,000 students studying from University to PhD programs from over 80
countries around the world. BCU students have had high positions at large enterprises.
In Vietnam, BCU is a Affiliate Program with 3 universities to provide a program for
students to experience different types of learning. Up till now, BCU has been linked with
Hồ Chí Minh National Universities (University of Economics and Law, University of
Information Technology) and Hà N i
ộ National Universities (Finance and Banking University). 2.2 The business activities
British International Academy Joint Stock Company (BCU) does business in the form of
vocational education, specializing in enrollment and training for students with the need to 6
"study abroad on the spot" through Affiliate Programs linked with Hồ Chí Minh National
Universities (University of Economics and Law, University of Information Technology) and Hà N i
ộ National Universities (Finance and Banking University). Birmingham City
University offers courses such as Bachelor of International Studies, University Transfer
and Master of Management and Finance. All programs follow the same curriculum and
degree structure as those offered in the United Kingdom. Students enrolled in the
program can study the complete course, including three semesters in Vietnam, or apply
for the UK program to study the remaining semesters in Britain. The courses of the
curriculum are based on a realistic integration of administration and finance.
2.3 The target customers
BCU Vietnam's enrollment is aimed at the segment of high school graduates or first-year
students who want to study in an international training program. There is a need to
experience "study abroad on the spot" at a cost 8 times cheaper than studying abroad. In
addition, parents are also interested in internationally recognized graduation certificates,
high job opportunities and competitive salaries.
2.4 The achievement of Birmingham City University -
Ranked 5th in the UK for research quality by the UK government's most recent assessment. -
Ranked 17th by The Guardian University Guide 2016. -

CHAPTER 3: POSITION AND TASKS 3.1. Position
As my major is Interpreting and Translation, I applied for the Translator position in BCU.
Translation is a new position that just opened and was hired interns this year. I was lucky
enough to work in the right position I chose at the right time. 8
In BCU, there are many departments that are divided. My position has not had its own
department yet so I am still in the Academic Department. This department includes:
Preparing and Planning the courses to fit with students at different levels, Teaching
students as teaching assistant, Translator,... 3.2 Tasks 3.2.1 Translator
As I mentioned above, this position is new and this time was the summer holiday, the
time for students to have a short break after a long semester so I did not have many tasks
to translate. Though, there are still some reports from the students and teachers I was
required to do the translation.
For detail, in this position, I usually translated reports and courses written in English into
Vietnamese. The reports were mostly from the other students, they wrote down their
experience about the courses they participated in in English, and I would translate these
words into Vietnamese. And with the other reports from teachers, there was information
about the schools, courses and their comments about the students in classes they took. I
have translated 2 reports since I started working here.
Figure 3: One of the reports as my task. 9
Figure 4: One of the reports I translated.
Beside my main position, I also have other tasks: 3.2.2 Telesale
This is the position of the HR department, I usually joined hands with them whenever I
completed tasks from the main position. In this position, before anything else, I was
requested to remember a script to introduce our courses. After that, there were many
papers with the numbers of candidates on it. I would pick up those numbers and call
candidates to start introducing the courses. If anyone had some interest in our courses
after listening to my call, then I would ask for their personal contact to give them more
information and counsel them easily. 3.2.3 Send emails
This was also a job from the HR department. I selected the email addresses from the
excel file and chose the email address from them to send. I was required to send enough
800 emails if it were the day I worked full time. 3.3 What I gained
Through 7 weeks of practicing at Birmingham City University, I have gained a lot of
interesting and meaningful experience from the real and professional environment. It is
not only a chance to help me discover more things about my major but also improve my
English skills, soft skills,... These following is what I have gained during my work- experience internship: 10 3.3.1 Translate skills
Learn additional specialist vocabulary in the subject of education and expand your
vocabulary when translating coursework and reports. Furthermore, I can find the best
way of translation to fit with the wording.
3.3.2 Communicate effectively
Communicating is also one of the significant skills I gained. While I was doing the
Telsele position, I had to talk and convince others through the phone. From that position
I learnt how to communicate confidently and improve my talking flow.
3.3.3 Sending and checking emails
Though sending emails is quite easy to do, I can still make some mistakes such as: using
wrong words, wrong subjects or sending to the wrong email address,... So, I have the
experience is to checking the content and email address carefully before sending. In
addition, I discovered more new tools for sending and checking emails. 11
CHAPTER 4: WORKING ENVIRONMENT 4.1 Company facilities
To be honest, the facilities are not very excellent, though I consider it still gives me
enough convenience. In BCU, they have 1 main room for the main part of employees and
2 back-up rooms for interns. The main room was always full so we had to move between
2 back-up rooms. Sometimes, even both of the 2 back-up rooms were also full because
they have to be set aside as classrooms for students, so we had to move to the other room
at the canteen. That was quite annoying because there were too many items that we also
had to carry on the way to change rooms. That was the only minus part.
The rest of the BCU material was stunning. I felt comfortable when I was working in the
office. They had almost anything I needed for my job, such as: air-conditioner always
turned on, power outlet, water,... even small things like wet tissues. These were such high plus points for them. 4.2 Working atmosphere
The working atmosphere in Birmingham City University was truly virtuous. All the staff
were exceedingly generous with the new interns. They were very friendly, they always
tried to create a welcoming onboarding experience for interns, assigned a culture couch to
new hires to teach them how the organization functions and answered any questions at all times.
Hence it was also challenging. Supervisor and even the staff in any event endeavored
interns to take on different responsibilities outside their daily task. Additionally, they
found many ways to push interns to create challenging stretch goals. It was very helpful
because it helped us know more about different positions besides my main task.
4.3 Relationship with colleagues and supervisor
It was a friendly relationship. I had a great cooperation with the colleagues from the
Interpreter and Telesale department. We spent almost all of our internship time together
and did not hesitate to ask for help when someone needed it. We could focus on our
strengths, and encourage each other to provide the best possible results. I enjoy working with them.
Though I did not meet my supervisor regularly, I also had a good impression with my
supervisor, Mrs. Thuan. She provided us everything we needed for the internship and
gave us many resources to complete the report perfectly. CHAPTER 5: SELF-EVALUATION
BCU is a worthy place to spend the Work experience internship here. Everything was just
amazing and remarkable. The past 7 weeks of being an intern is not a long amount of 12
time but I can still be capable of how much of the advantages I have earned. After this, I
realized what I should prepare for my job in the future, and understand how a real office environment works…
I estimate myself to have upgraded although I just spent a short time learning and
practicing. I have pulled a pile of cores about my skills, known how to hone my existing
skills and gain experience to facilitate my career growth. Besides that, I still have some
weak points such as: sometimes I had been late for work or zoomed out when I was on shift. 13
CHAPTER 6: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
After completing my Work experience internship at the BCU admissions office, I felt
very happy that the business gave me the opportunity to work in an amusing, friendly
environment but still ensured my work goals and conditions for me to complete this
report. Over and above, I had the opportunity to get to know the new people at the
admissions office, everyone together built a comfortable working environment and
always enthusiastically supported the interns.
On the whole, BCU is splendid but the existing state of the business is perhaps not
appealing to the modern workforce since it appears to have little potential for
development and promotion. I think the company should improve workplace facilities to
make it look more up-to-date and convenient for employees. 14 REFERENCES
