INDIVIDUAL EXAM CASE
With digital presence becoming a key factor in graduate employability,
building up your skills and curating a strong digital profile provides numerous
advantages to students. For this assignment, you are required to plan and
implement a personal online branding project. The brand in this situation is
you, and the overall aim of the assignment is to increase your appeal to
future employers by improving your skills and showcasing them through a
strong online profile.
What you need to do
1.!Situation analysis(45 Minutes)
To start the assignment, you first need to assess your current situation, the
opportunities available to you, and the attributes sought by your
potential!future!employers. Your evaluation will need to contain:!
1.1. A brief introduction to the industry you want to work in, and the types
(2 - 5) of companies you are aspiring to work for.
1.2. Some thoughts about viability of that industry and any
potential threats, including the level of competition from other
graduates and the role of technology. (Porter Forces)
1.3. Identification of the opportunities available to you, including
the types of roles available, and the skills and attributes
required for your desired roles. www.vietnamworks.com
For example you could find 4-5 job advertisements on www.vietnamworks.com, and
then analyse them to come up with a list of the types of skills, attributes and online
profiles a graduate is expected to have). Provide these job advertisements as evidence
in an appendix.
1.4. A!brief!description of your target customers (i.e. the people
who are going to be making the decision to hire you or not).
(Customer Persona)
1.5. An analysis of your own personal strengths and weaknesses,
including your skills and attributes, and identification of key
areas for improvement. (SWOT)
1.6. An evaluation of your current public digital profile, focusing
specifically on identifying areas for improvement.
Hint 1: Use some of the analysis frameworks we speak about in class to
structure your thinking and analysis (i.e. Porter's Five Forces, Customer
persona, SWOT etc.)
Hint 2: When identifying your industry, companies and roles, you need to be
as specific but you do not need to lock yourself into a single company (i.e. if
you would like to work as a digital marketer in a marketing agency, and you
identify 3-5 agencies in Vietnam that you could work for, that is sufficient).
Hint 3: Use industry reports, industry articles, news and career resources to
do your research around the types of roles available and what employers are
looking for.
2. Strategic plan!(45 Minutes)
Based on!your analysis, you will need to develop a broad strategic approach
to!increase your appeal!to future employers by improving your skills and
your digital presence.
Your broad strategic plan should!be closely linked with your analysis in
Step!1, and must!include:!
2.1. A ‘ which communicates your unique selling positioning statement’
proposition and how you want to be seen by employers.
2.2. An outline of your objectives (ensure you follow the SMART
framework for setting objectives)!
2.3. Details! of the that you will strategies and tactics
implement both in the short!term (during!the!semester)!and
long term, and the channels used.!
2.4. Anaction plan, including timeframes
and!budget!estimates!(best presented as a table)!
Your plan needs to include both strategies that enhance your skills and
attributes (to meet your future employer’s requirements) and those that
enhance your online presence so that you can communicate these qualities
to prospective employers.
Hint 1: A positioning statement is written in a very specific format. Find the
template online and fill in the blanks. Read over your positioning statement,
and read it out loud. If it sounds like it could be talking about anyone, it is
not unique enough and should be re-written.
Hint 2: To build a strong skills base, there are lots of different strategies and
tactics you could undertake, including for example taking free online courses
via!!LinkedIn Learning Links to an external site.
Hint 3: To enhance your digital presence,!there are many strategies and
tactics you could consider, for example building or optimising your personal
website, updating your online resume, starting a blog in your area of interest
and blogging regularly, building and optimising your social media profiles
(including LinkedIn).
Hint 4: Everything you do here should be closely linked to your analysis of
your current skills/profile vs. what employers are looking for (you should be
focused on bridging the gap), and should take into account your target
audience.!
Hint 5: Your action plan can have short (during semester) and long term
components (after semester), and if there are any associated costs, they
should be backed up with evidence.
3. Implementation!(30 Minutes)
You must partially implement your!action!plan NOW by opening a LinkedIn
account, creating a professional profile and add your teacher.
