CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
This semester, every student of English Department was given a chance to take a two-
month internship at any companies to find out more about the work in practical environment
with a view to having a clearer look at practical work and orienting their work in the upcoming years.
During my last year's pre-internship, I chose a company whose major is study-abroad
consulting, so this time, I decided to experience my internship in a totally different environment.
Therefore, I opted BSH Gia Dinh Insurance Company for my two - month internship dating
from February 11th to April 5th.

guidance of Mr. Ton That Quang Vinh and to assist other members in this department do other office work when necessary.
My internship period lasted for two months from February 11th, 2019 to April 4th, 2019.
I work full-time in the company from Monday to Friday. The office hour starts at 8:00 in the
morning and ends at 5.30 in the afternoon. We had a 1-hour and 30-minute rest at noon (from 12.00 to 1.30). Page 4
CHAPTER 2: DESCRIPTION OF INTERNSHIP
My internship can be divided into 2 periods which is described clearly as follow:
Period 1 started from February 11 to March 1.
On my first day of internship, Mr. Vinh, who was my supervisor, introduced me with
other members of the department. He had a brief summary about the role of each person in data
- processing procedure and the work I had to do in the next following weeks. Thanks to this, I
took an overall look at the company and could imagine what I would do here. On following
days, I learned about some basic office skills like how to use a scanner, a photocopy. Moreover,
Mr. Vinh sent me some model translation which were translated previously so that I can make
it as my reference. In fact, I sometimes have difficulties in vocabularies because I was not
familiar with terms in insurances. Therefore, I need to use the Internet and dictionaries a lot.
This reference was very useful for me in period 2 when I had to translate assigned documents related to insurance.
Period 2 started from March 4 to April 5
After 2 weeks getting used to the company and work here, I was assigned to translate
documents which included texts introducing various kinds of insurance (for example: health
care, car insurance, liability insurance, technical insurance), insurance contracts. First, Mr. Vinh
gave me a text in Vietnamese to translate in specific time depending on the length of the text.
After finishing my translation, I summitted it to Mr. Vinh. Then he read it and gave feedback
and edited my translation. He also reminded me of some common mistakes that I did not pay
attention to. After that, he sent it back to me so that I could learn and avoid repeating those
mistakes in the next translations. For example:
Source text: “Phạm vi của bảo hiểm toàn diện học sinh: Ốm đau, bệnh tật, thai sản phải nằm
viện hoặc phẫu thuật.”
My translation: “The scope of comprehensive student insurance: People who are sick or
pregnant had to be hospitalized or operated.”
After edited: “Coverage of comprehensive student insurance: Subsidies for hospitalization and
surgery due to illness, morbidity” Page 5
For longer texts, I had opportunities to work in a team with other trainees. We separated
the text into many parts and each of us was responsible for one part. After that, we gathered and
helped each other to correct mistakes about grammars as well as word choices.
I was really interested in this period of my internship because I could take advantages
of my time to translate documents in order to apply what I learned at school to practical work.
Thanks to this time, I comprehended what I would do after graduation. Furthermore, I
understood my strengths and weaknesses so that I could have clear plan to enhance myself to
be able to succeed in the future. Page 6
CHAPTER 3: ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION
This two- month internship was a precious occasion for me to apply what I learnt at school to practical situation
Firstly, with the help of theories I learnt in Theory of Translation and Interpretation, I
easily know what style of translation was the most appropriate in a certain context. For example,
when I was assigned to translate about short text about information of an insurance such as
insurance for the private, property insurance. I was aware that the biggest purpose is to provide
customers with useful information. As a result, I did not stick closely each sentence and
translate word by word from Vietnamese to English. I will focus more on ideas and express in
other ways for customers to follow easily. The words I used were somehow more informal and
familiar; However, when it came to insurance contracts, the accuracy was more important and
the style of writing was very formal. Therefore, I paid more intention to choose the right specialized words.
Furthermore, this time was very convenient for me to apply Business Translation, which
I learned in last semester. Thanks to Business Translation, I was familiar to archaic adverbs.
These words are rarely used in modern English; however, they are common in business
contracts and legal situations. For example: pursuant to = according to herein = here subject to = depending on
hereinafter = in the following part of document For details:
Source text: “ Căn cứ vào nhu cầu và khả năng của bên A và bên B, sau đây gọi chung là các Bên”
Translation: “Based on the demands and abilities of party A and party B, hereinafter collectively
referred to as The Parties”.
Moreover, based on the knowledge in Business Translation, I knew how to choose
words which were suitable in contract context. For instance, the word "shall" is more popular Page 7
than the word "will" in contract with the meaning "phải" or sometimes, the word "if" in
conditional sentences is replaced by "in case" Examples:
Source text: “Nếu bên mua bảo hiểm không thể đóng Phí bảo hiểm định kỳ theo đúng ngày đến
hạn đóng phí đã thỏa thuận, công ty sẽ áp dụng thời gian gia hạn đóng phí 60 ngày”
Translation: “In case the insured cannot pay the Premium periodically according to the agreed
due date, the insurer shall apply the 60-day premium grace period.”
What’s more, this period of time helped me expand my vocabulary specialized in
insurance. Additionally, there are a lot of terms in insurance that I could not understand if I
simply translated it word by word. For example:
AD & D Rider = accidental death and dismemeberment rider: Điều khoản riêng về chết
và tổn thất toàn bộ do tai nạn
Assignee: Người được chuyển nhượng
Assignment: Chuyển nhượng
Assignment provision: Điều khoản chuyển nhượng
Assignor: Người chuyển nhượng
Face amount: Số tiền bảo hiểm
Last but not least, I learned a lot about professional working style. Everyone was flexible
and intelligent in their work arrangement. They took priority on urgent work and organized
their time suitably to finish their work instead of dealing with problems orderly. More
importantly, when they worked, they totally concentrated on their tasks and were responsible
for their performance. If they made mistakes, they did not blame it for anyone else. Meeting
new collegues who were both talented and professional was very valuable experience and they motivated me to improve myself to be a good translator in future. Strength:
First of all, I was really friendly, so I did not have any difficulty getting used to new
environment and making acquaintance with my new colleagues at the company. Next, I always Page 8
regarded this period as an opportunity for me to apply my knowledge and skills into reality.
Therefore, during the internship, I always was in a good mood with can-do attitude, creative
and eager to learn new things. Moreover, I had good sense of discipline, so I always complied
strictly regulations of workplace especially about work time. At school, I learnt to work
independently as well as work in group so I always respected others’ tasks and was strictly
responsible for my tasks. Last but not least, I could translate basically a document in the source
language into the target language without spending too much time. Weaknesses
I could not deny that I had lots of things which needed to improve. Firstly, it is my translating
skill. Sometimes when translating strange documents, I spent much time for looking up the
meaning of the word and making my translation become more natural. Besides, I realize that I
need to expand my vocabulary in many topics. One more thing to notice is that sometimes when
I was doing too much tasks, I was confused and it took even much more time to deal all the
problems, so I think I need to acquire more knowledge on skill of managing work to increase productivity. Page 9 CHAPTER 4: CONCLUSION
In conclusion, this internship helped me know what my strength and weakness in order
to improve myself. I learnt a lot of new things that I could not learnt everywhere else. For
instance, I improved my computing skills as well as other office skills. In addition, I knew how
to organize my own work, manage time and deal with the number of tasks to work effectively.
More importantly, I could practice my translating skills which was the vital part in professional career path later.
In general, all of the specialized subjects at Ho Chi Minh University of Education
provided me with general background knowledge, which made me confident when I was
assigned a task. There were several subjects like Theory of Translation and Interpretation,
Business Translation and Practice Translation, Reading and Writing whose knowledge was
very helpful for my internship. It helped me not spend much time in reading comprehensive
and translation. I also seldom made mistakes in grammar and spelling.
However, since terminologies and technical terms used in business fields in general and
in insurance sector in particular are specialized, memorizing those terms and searching
materials for translating are integral parts of the job. What’s more, not only do I have to possess
knowledge of legal terminology, I have to be versed in statutory requirements and the legal
intricacies of foreign legal systems.
Besides, I think the biggest limit of this internship was that I did not have chances to
practice interpretation from English and Vietnamese and vice versa and translating from
English to Vietnamese because most of the tasks that I was assigned was to translate from
Vietnamese to English. Regardless of these limits, this internship not only gave me a number
of valuable lessons but it also opened my eyes to understand what I needed to do to be a better
translator in foreseeable future. Page 10
