During the internship period, I was assigned as the service engineer in Sales Deparment of PT Medical Company. Service engineer is responsible for installing, scheduled maintenance, solving any arising problems regarding the devices and training the market’s staff on how to operate it. Our department specialized in blood gas analyzers such as Rapidlab 1265, Stratus CS200, Rapidlab 348EX, and Rapidpoint 500. 1 Organization overview
1.1 Background
PT Medical was founded in June 2009, it was first known as an exclusive distributor
in cardiovascular intervention devices, including stents, ballon from OrbusNeich
(Netherlands) and guide wires from Asahi Intecc (Japan).
In December 2012, a representative office was established in Hanoi to reach out the
Northern part of Vietnam. Untill the end of 2016, one more representative office was
opened in Danang city, in the middle area of Vietnam.

During the internship period, I was assigned as the service engineer in Sales
Deparment of PT Medical Company. Service engineer is responsible for installing,
scheduled maintenance, solving any arising problems regarding the devices and training
the market’s staff on how to operate it.
2.1 Medical devices
Our department specialized in blood gas analyzers such as Rapidlab 1265, Stratus
CS200, Rapidlab 348EX, and Rapidpoint 500. In this internship, I was mainly
working with Rapidlab 348EX and Rapidpoint 500.
2.1.1 Rapidlab 348EX
Rapidlab 348EX is a blood gas electrolyte analyzer developed by Siemens
Healthineer. The device is an easy to use analyzer capable of performing quick
tests.

2.1.1.1 Technology
Rapidlab 348EX using bioelectrode and gas technology for accurate results and long
lifespan electrode

On demand or automated calibration
2.1.1.2 Device overview
Sample type : whole blood, dialysate fluid.
Sample volume : syringe: 95 µL; capillary: 95 µL; microsample: 50 µL.
Analytes : pH, pCO2, pO2, Na+, K+, Ca++, Cl-, Hct.
Calculated parameters : O2SAT, O2CT, HCO3 (-act), HCO3 (-std), ctCO2, BE(b),
BE(ecf), pO2(A-a), pO2(a/A), pO2/FiO2, Ca++ (7.4), pH(T), H+(T), pCO2(T),
pO2(T), pO2(A-a)(T), pO2(a/A)(T), ctHb(est).
2.1.2 Rapidpoint 500
Rapidpoint 500 is an upgraded model of Rapidlab 348EX developed by Siemens
providing more convenience for technicians to operate.
2.1.2.1 Technology
Rapidpoint 500 used the “cartridge” system, all the necessities for performing tests
such as sensors and chemicals are included in the replaceable cartridge.
Electrodes don’t need maintance to work properly.
2.1.2.2 Device overview
Sample type : whole blood (arterial and venous), pleural fluid and dialysate.
Sample volume : syringe: 200 µL; capillary: 100 µL.
Analytes :
o Blood gas: pH, pO2, pCO2. o Electrolytes : Na+, K+, Cl-, Ca++. o
Metabolites : Glucose, Lactate. o CO – Oxymetries : tHb, sO2, FO2Hb,
FHHb, FCOHb, FMetHb, nBili. o Pleural fluid pH.
2.2 Duties
In this internship, I was tasked with assisting service engineers in:
Testing, installing, and training new device for new market.
Solving arising problem regarding the installed devices.
2.2.1 Installing new equipment procedures
Service receive new installation request.
Diagnostic manager check contract commitments, customer information.
Perform site survey.
Sales representative contact logistics to confirm shipment.

Assign service engineer to perform installation.
Confirm installation date with customer.
Perform installation.
Validation.
Operator training.
Sign off installation commissioning.
2.2.2 Operator training procedures
Service manager assign engineer to perform training.
Contact customer for time and operators.
Perform operator training.
Examining operators’ knowledge.
Ask the operators to complete application training satisfaction survey.
Ask the operators to sign in the confirmation that they have finished the training.

3 Lesson learnt
In this internship, I have learnt:
Steps and procedures of how to install a medical devices into new market.
Experience in operating, regular maintenance, and troubleshooting medical devices
such as Rapidlab 348EX and Rapidpoint 500.
Insight of working fields of biomedical engineers.
Understanding of the working relationship of biomedical engineer with doctors,
operators, and technicians.
Learn the importance of biomedical engineers in healthcare services.
Learn the difficulties and challenges of a biomedical engineer.

4 Challenges
The major challenges is the working time. A service engineer have to be prepared at
all time to ensure the equipment is working properly and always ready to solve any
problem arising regarding the equipment. Since our job is closely related to the patients’
wellbeing, we have to put the benefits of our customers first, even at times when the
equipment having error at late nights or holidays and require the assistance of the
engineers. This have become valuable experience for me in future projects and in real
life exposure.
