BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
Once upon a time, there was a rich merchant who had three daughters. The
youngest one was called Beauty by everyone and she was smart and kind unlike her sisters.
They always envied her. One day their father lost all his money because all his ships sank at
sea. They were poor now.
While their father worked in the fields, Beauty did the cleaning and prepared
meals for the family. Her sisters did nothing, but complain all day. After a year the merchant
heard the news that one of his ships returned undamaged. He decided to go to the ship and
before he left he asked his daughters what they wanted as gifts.
The sisters asked for expensive things and Beauty only wanted a rose. When he
reached his ship, it was undamaged, but empty. He was still poor and he had to go back. On
the way, when he was close to his house, a blizzard started. He couldn’t go anymore and he
had to find a shelter. Suddenly he saw a castle and went in.
There was no one in it. He was cold and hungry. He dried his clothes and ate the
meal he found on the table. As he was so tired, he fell asleep on a bed that he found there.
When he woke up in the morning, he found some clean clothes and wore them. He was
about to leave the castle when he saw some roses in the garden.
As soon as he plucked one of them, a beast ran towards him. The merchant was so
scared because the beast threatened to kill him. The man told him about his daughters and
begged for his life. The beast wanted him to promise that one of his daughters would come
and die instead of him. The merchant had to agree.
Before he left, the beast gave him a bag full of gold and precious things. When the
man arrived home and told what had happened, Beauty decided to go to the Beasts castle.
She left home and went there with his father. The beast thought she had a very good heart
when he learned that she had come with her own will.
Her father left and she started crying. At first, she thought the beast was going to
kill him, but later she realised that it was not true. He had prepared her a lovely room.
There was a mirror on the wall which showed her home as well. She thought the beast had
a good heart and he would never hurt her. They started living together.
Every evening the beast would ask Beauty to marry him and she would always
refuse. Three months passed like this. One day, Beauty looked at the mirror on the wall and
saw that her father was very sick. She ran to the beast and begged him to let her go home.
The beast agreed that she could visit her family.
He wanted her to promise to be back on the eighth day and gave her a ring. She
woke up in her house the next morning. She stayed there more than eight days because her
envious sisters insisted. On the tenth day she saw the beast was lying almost dead on the
ground in her dream. She woke up and went back to the castle.
When she arrived, she found the beast on the ground. He had fainted, but she
thought he was dead. She started crying. When her tears dropped on the beast’s chest, he
turned into a handsome prince. He had been turned into a beast by an angry fairy long ago.
Finding true love had broken the spell. The got married and lived happily.
